  • Two Barton softball players sign to play at four-year level

    Two players from the Barton Community College softball team have signed letters of intent to play next season at the NCAA and NAIA levels. First team All-Conference selection Emilia Davies signed with NCAA Division I member University of Massachusetts Lowell while Darian Hudson signed to play at NAIA Division I Langston University.
  • Four Barton softball players earn All-Conference Awards

    Four Barton Community College softball players were recently named to the KJCCC Division I All-Conference Team. Sophomore Emilia Davies led three Barton freshmen to the list being named first team at the utility position while also being submitted for NJCAA All-American consideration. Great Bend’s Stephanie Morrison at third base was joined by second baseman Bailey Hensley and right fielder Erica Harper in garnering second team honors. The awards come as the Lady Cougars wrapped up its season under first-year Head Coach Marc Benjamin at 21-24 after reaching the Region VI final three for the second straight season.

    The Barton Community College softball team had their 2014 season come to an end Sunday at Wichita State University's Wilkens Stadium as the Lady Cougars lost 5-2 to Seward County Community College. The loss to the Saints was the second straight season Seward County has ended the Lady Cougars’ season in the final three of the Region VI Tournament. Barton ends the season under first-year head coach Marc Benjamin at 21-24 while Seward County improves to 47-11 and advances to the Region VI Championship game against No. 7 Butler Community College.
  • Dramatic comeback gets Barton softball to Region final three

    Down to their final out, the Barton Community College softball team refused to close out their 2014 season scoring two runs in the seventh to defeat Garden City Community College 9-8 Sunday at Wichita State University's Wilkens Stadium and stay alive in the Region VI Tournament. The victory advances the 20-23 Lady Cougars in the final three of Region VI and an elimination game away from the championship game while ending the season of the Broncbusters at 22-33. With a short rest, Barton will take the field against Seward County Community College for the right to take on No. 7 Butler Community College for the crown. Seward, 46-11 on the season, dropped to the elimination game falling to the Grizzlies 8-3 earlier Sunday.

    If the Barton Community College softball team had any thoughts to knock off Butler Community College in the winner’s bracket of the Region VI Tournament, the No. 7 ranked Grizzlies quickly dampened those hopes Saturday at Wichita State University’s Wilkens Stadium. Butler struck for four runs in the first and six in the second as the Grizzlies lit up the scoreboard scoring in every inning for the 13-3 five-inning contest. The loss drops the 20-23 Lady Cougars to the 12:00 p.m. elimination game on Sunday against Garden City Community College. The Broncbusters stayed alive with a 7-4 victory Saturday afternoon ending Colby Community College’s season at 10-40. Butler advances to the 10:00 a.m. winner’s bracket final against Seward County Community College.

    The Barton Community College opened the Region VI Tournament Saturday morning with a 5-4 come from behind victory over Colby Community College. The victory advances the 20-22 Lady Cougars to the 2:00 p.m. game against the top seeded and No. 7 ranked Butler Community College. Colby dropped to 10-39 and will fight to keep their season alive playing Garden City Community College in the 4:00 p.m. elimination game. Garden City dropped to the elimination game being beat 2-1 by Seward County Community College in the noon game.
  • Davies grand slam powers Barton softball to split at McCook

    The Barton Community College softball team wrapped up regular season play Sunday in McCook, Nebraska, rebounding from a 5-4 loss to win game two 14-6 at McCook Community College. The Lady Cougars rallied from a four-run deficit in game one to tie it up in the sixth but a two out double sent Barton to its eleventh straight loss. Barton trailed again in game two by one after the first but scored nine in the next two innings highlighted by Emilia Davies’ grand slam as Barton cruised to the 14-6 five inning contest. Barton was scheduled to wrap up regular season play on Monday at North Platte Community College but rains sweeping through the state forced the cancellation. Barton finishes the regular season at 19-22 and 3-13 for fourth place in the Jayhawk. The Lady Cougars will begin Region VI Tournament play on Saturday at Wichita State University’s Wilkins Stadium, taking on fifth place Colby Community College in the 10:00 a.m. game. The winner of the Barton-Colby matchup will play No. 7 ranked Butler Community College at 2:00 p.m. while the loser will play the 4:00 p.m. elimination game against the loser of the 12:00 p.m. Seward County Community College versus Garden City Community College matchup.
  • Cougars drop doubleheader to No. 7 Grizzlies

    The Barton Community College softball team may have dropped a doubleheader to No. 7 Butler Community College, but the Lady Cougars made things interesting in throwing a few punches of their own. Trailing 4-0 after Butler’s first at-bat, the Lady Cougars cut the lead to one after three innings of play but Butler flexed its muscles with a three run fourth and seven run sixth to win game one 14-3. The Lady Cougars regrouped for game two and despite trailing by three early, Barton battled to tie the game in the fifth only to have Butler respond with two in the sixth to win 5-3. Butler wrapped up its conference season with the wins to improve to 15-1 in the Jayhawk and 31-7 overall while the Lady Cougars drop to 3-11 in conference dipped under the .500 mark for the first time since the start of the season at 18-19. Barton will conclude the conference and home schedule on Friday in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader with Seward County Community College. The 41-10 and 8-4 second place Saints will come to Cougar Field having played back-to-back road games as Seward travels to Colby on Thursday.

    The Barton Community College softball team couldn’t recover from a disappointing first game loss in dropping a conference doubleheader Wednesday at Colby Community College. The Lady Cougars squandered a seven run fifth inning lead surrendering eight runs in the final three innings to lose 10-9. Barton again led early in game two but Colby scored two in each of the first two innings then broke a fourth inning tie with a single run to send the Lady Cougars to a 5-4 loss. The pair of losses sends the Lady Cougars on a six-game skid dropping to 18-17 on the season and 3-9 in Jayhawk Conference play while Colby improves to 11-30 and 3-11 in conference. Barton will have a week to regroup before No. 7 ranked Butler Community College comes to Cougar Field next Wednesday for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
  • Barton softball drop two against nationally ranked foes in Colby Tournament

    Playing two ranked teams in the Colby Tournament held this past Saturday in Colby, Kansas, the Barton Community College softball team came out on the short end finishing the day with three losses. The Lady Cougars opened play early Saturday afternoon surrendering an early two-run lead and giving up five runs in the final two innings to lose 13-7 to nationally receiving votes Western Nebraska Community College. Barton had a chance for redemption from two losses to start the season getting the draw with Lamar Community College but a six-run sixth inning dismissed those chances as the Lady Cougars fell 10-2. With Sunday’s weather forecast looking dismal for continued play and wanting to at least get three games played during the trip out west, Barton immediately took the field following the loss to Lamar to take on No. 18 ranked Otero Junior College. The Lady Cougars struck for two in the third to hold a 2-1 lead into the fourth before Otero scored four in the home half to assume control in route to the 6-3 win. The three losses on the day dropped Barton to 18-15 on the season as the Lady Cougars will head back out to Colby on Wednesday for a pair of conference games beginning at 2:00 p.m. Colby is 9-30 on the season and 1-11 in conference play while Barton will bring a 3-7 record into the contest.
  • Bollig blasts three home runs as Barton softball gets doubleheader split at Garden City

    It wasn’t the end result the Barton Community College softball team was seeking out of Wednesday’s trip to Garden City as the Lady Cougars split a pair of conference games with Garden City Community College. The Lady Cougars took control early in game one and put the hammer down in a 12-1 five inning shortened contest only to have Garden City return the favor in a 15-7 six inning game. Candace Bollig was the big offensive news as the Ellis, Kansas, freshman blasted three homeruns and drove in seven runs in the twinbill while sophomore Emilia Davies went 5-7 with a double and triple. The split kept Barton behind the Broncbusters in the conference standings as Barton moves to 3-7 conference and 18-12 overall while Garden City stands at 7-7 in conference and 17-20 overall. Barton will next head to Colby, Kansas, to play five games in the Colby Invitational taking place on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Barton softball continues non-conference onslaught scoring thirty-two runs in doubleheader sweep in Lindsborg

    The Barton Community College softball team picked up a couple of non-conference victories Monday, traveling to Lindsborg, Kansas, to defeat the junior varsity squad of Bethany College 15-10 and 17-5. The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 11-2 lead after two at-bats in game one cruising to the victory. The tables turned for the start of the second game as Bethany jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning only to have the Lady Cougars respond with an eleven run third inning on the way to the 17-5 victory. Barton crossed the plate thirty-two times on Monday after scoring twenty-seven runs on Saturday and have scored seventeen runs in two of the last three games. Going 15-5 in non-conference games, Barton improves to 17-11 on the season will take a 2-6 conference record to Garden City, Kansas, on Wednesday as the competition stiffens in Jayhawk Conference play. The Broncbusters, who swept the Cougars back on March 19 in Great Bend, lead Barton in the standings for third place entering the contest at 5-5 in conference play and 14-19 overall. First pitch for the pivotal doubleheader is 2:00 p.m. at the Tangeman Sports Complex with live web streaming available at www.BartonSports.com.
  • Barton softball back on winning track with doubleheader sweep in Manhattan

    The Barton community College softball team scored seven runs in each of the first two innings to record two run-rule victories Saturday in Manhattan, Kansas, against the Kansas State University Club team. The Lady Cougars scored one in the first and two in the second of game one to win 10-0 in five innings then followed with a six run first and two run second to run away with a 17-1 win in five innings. Barton improves to 15-11 on the season while dropping KSU to 0-5 on their young season. With the cancellation of Sunday’s home game against McPherson College junior varsity, the Lady Cougars have added Bethany College’s junior varsity to the schedule for Monday traveling to Lindsborg, Kansas, for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader.
  • Lady Cougars unleash the bats in doubleheader split at Pratt

    Scoring thirty-four runs in two softball games will usually equate to a doubleheader sweep but for the Barton Community College softball team it simply meant a split as Pratt Community College rallied for a 16-15 win in game one while the Lady Cougars took out their fury in game two with a 18-0 win in five innings. Barton pounded out thirty-seven hits in the doubleheader including seven home runs, two coming from freshman leadoff hitter Bailey Hensley. The Lady Cougars also got a strong pitching performance in game two as sophomore Ashlyn Osborne struck out five in limiting the Pratt bats to only two hits after getting fourteen in game one. The split moves Barton the 13-9 on the season while Pratt stands at 6-22. The Lady Cougars will hope to continue the hot bats on Sunday as Barton returns to conference action to take on No. 1 ranked Butler Community College. Barton, 2-4 in conference play, travels to El Dorado to take on the 16-3 Grizzlies who stand atop the Jayhawk standings at 2-0 in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at East Park.
  • Davies named conference player of week, becomes second Barton Softball player to win weekly award

    For the second time this season a Barton Community College softball player has been named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Verizon Wireless Softball Player of the Week. Emilia Davies joins teammate Ashlyn Osborne to receive the honor this season after batting .688 last week going 11-16 with seven RBIs. Despite a rough week for the Cougar team overall, Davies blasted two home runs in the Lady Cougars 10-9 loss to Garden City last Wednesday then hit three doubles in Friday’s game against the Kansas Wesleyan University junior varsity to give the sophomore from Colorado seven extra-base hits in sixteen at-bats. The week’s effort also raised Davies’ average from .364 to .437 (31-71) while leading the team in runs, doubles, triples, and total bases and ranks in the top three in most other offensive categories for the Lady Cougars.

    Dropping a controversial 10-9 first game, the Barton Community College softball team pounded out a 9-1 five inning shortened game two to split Friday’s doubleheader at Cougar Field against the junior varsity squad from Kansas Wesleyan University. Eerily similar to Barton’s two-run collapse in Wednesday’s game against Garden City, the Cougars led 9-7 with one out in the top of the seventh before a two RBI double to right field appeared to land well into foul territory but was ruled in play allowing KWU to tie it up. Three batters later the Coyotes pushed across the game winning hit then held on to strand two Barton runners in the home half to win 10-9. The Cougars bounced back in the second game getting two runs in the first and third innings then put the game away in the fourth with a four run inning in route to the 9-1 win. The doubleheader split leaves Barton at 12-8 on the season while the KWU junior varsity stands at 9-4. The Cougars will have a few days off to conclude the College’s spring break before preparing for a return to conference action next Wednesday to take on No. 1 ranked Butler Community College. Barton, 2-4 in conference play, travels to El Dorado to take on the 14-3 Grizzlies who stand atop the Jayhawk standings at 2-0 in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at East Park.
  • Two Davies home runs and three consecutive Cougar home runs not enough as Barton Softball outslugged in doubleheader sweep

    Snapping an eight-game win streak at Cougar Field, the Barton Community College softball team lost a pair of slugfests in Wednesday’s conference doubleheader losing 17-3 and 10-9 to Garden City Community College. The Broncbusters scored in every inning of game one pounding out nineteen hits to the Cougars ten in running away for the five inning fourteen run victory. Barton bounced back in the second game to erase a 3-0 first inning deficit to score four runs in the home half courtesy of three consecutive homeruns in outhitting the Broncbusters 15-12. But Barton couldn’t hold a two run lead in the seventh in dropping a heartbreaking 10-9 decision. The pair of losses taint the two home run performance from sophomore Emilia Davies and drops Barton to 11-7 on the season and 2-4 in conference play while Garden City improves to 11-14 and 3-3 in the Jayhawk. The Lady Cougars will step out of conference play this Friday as the junior varsity of Kansas Wesleyan University comes to Cougar Field. First pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

    The Barton Community College softball team helped build mountains Friday in Liberal, Kansas, but couldn’t quite climb them in dropping a pair of Region VI Jayhawk Conference games to No. 11 Seward County Community College at Lady Saints Field. Barton surrendered seven runs in the first two innings of each game in losing 8-3 and 10-4. The pair of losses drop the Lady Cougars to 2-2 in conference and 11-5 on the season while Seward County improves to 4-2 and 21-4 overall. The Lady Cougars will take a few days off before getting back to the diamond to prepare for Wednesday’s conference matchup with Garden City Community College. First pitch at Cougar Field for the conference doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
  • Barton Softball opens conference season with sweep over Colby, improve to 11-3 on season

    The Barton Community College softball team opened Jayhawk Conference play Wednesday sweeping a pair from Colby Community College at Cougar Field. The Cougars came back from an early 3-0 deficit to explode for nine runs in the fourth inning to capture game one 11-7. In game two, Barton wasted little time in putting away the Trojans scoring eight runs in the first and adding two more in the second to go on for the five-inning 10-2 run rule. Barton improves to 11-3 on the season and 2-0 in conference play while dropping Colby to 4-15 and 1-3 in the Jayhawk. The Lady Cougars will have a day of rest before heading to Liberal, Kansas, on Friday to take on No. 11 ranked Seward County Community College. After dropping its first two conference games to No. 3 ranked Butler Community College, the Lady Saints swept Garden City Community College on Wednesday to even their conference mark at 2-2 and improve to 19-4 on the season. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Lady Saints Field.

    The Barton Community College softball team had its streak of winning eight straight games come to an abrupt end Sunday in Independence, Kansas. Having dropped the first game of the doubleheader 11-0, the Lady Cougars bounced back with a slugfest 13-12 victory to split the two game series with Independence Community College. Barton now stands at 9-3 on the season while Independence moved to 15-5 on the season. The Lady Cougars open conference play on Wednesday hosting Colby Community College in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader at Cougar Field.

    Despite not playing for ten days due to adverse weather conditions, the Barton Community College softball team picked up where they left off in sweeping Thursday’s doubleheader at Cougar Field defeating the junior varsity squad of Bethany College 10-5 and 12-4. The victory is the eight straight for the Cougars improving to 8-2 on the season while dropping Bethany to 1-4. Barton will next play ion Sunday at Independence Community College in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
  • Historic start to the season earns Barton Softball’s Osborne conference honor

    Barton Community College softball player Ashlyn Osborne has been named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Verizon Wireless Softball Player of the Week. Osborne began the week in the midst of a consecutive streak of reaching base ten straight times while capping off the week by smacking a double to left field. The consecutive streak is the best for a Lady Cougar dating back to at least the 2002 season and has helped Barton win six straight games for the first time since the 2008 season. For the week the sophomore from Killeen, Texas, batted .611 going 11-for-18 including six doubles, ten runs batted in, five walks, and stole one base. Osborne also picked up three wins during the week from the center circle to improve to 3-1 on the season. After beginning the season 0-for-2, Osborne is 15-for-22 for a .682 batting average.
  • Barton Softball sweeps Hutchinson, wins sixth straight

    The Barton Community College softball team ran their winning streak to six games on Saturday at Cougar Field, sweeping the doubleheader against Hutchinson Community College 7-6 and 14-6 in six innings. Winning six in a row for the first time since the 2008 season, Barton improves to 6-2 on the season while dropping Hutchinson to 1-5. Barton will play its next six games on the road beginning with the junior varsity squad of Bethany College on Tuesday. The Cougars won’t return to play at Cougar Field until Wednesday, March 5, as Bethany will return the series.
  • Barton Softball wins fourth straight, sweep Neosho 8-0 and 11-4

    The Barton Community College softball team picked up a pair of decisive wins Thursday at Chanute, Kansas, defeating the host Neosho County Community College 8-0 and 11-4. Barton improves to 4-2 on the season while dropping Neosho to 2-5. Barton will return to Cougar Field on Saturday as the Cougars will host Hutchinson Community College for a pair of 7-inning games set for 12:00 p.m.
  • Fourteen extra base hits lift Cougars to twinbill sweep over Brown Mackie

    The Barton Community College softball team christened Cougar Field under first year head coach Marc Benjamin in impressive fashion Tuesday sweeping the doubleheader against Brown Mackie College. The Cougars won by identical 9-1 sixth inning scores to even their season mark to 2-2, while dropping Brown Mackie to 0-2 to start the season. Barton will head to Chanute, Kansas, for a pair of games on Thursday before returning home for a doubleheader on Saturday against Hutchinson Community College.

    The Barton Community College softball team will make its 2014 debut at Cougar Field on Tuesday against Brown Mackie College. Originally scheduled to travel Tuesday, wet field conditions at Fort Scott Community College forced the cancellation of the games. Instead, the Cougars will get a welcomed opportunity to host two games as the Lions of Brown Mackie come in for a doubleheader. First pitch for the twinbill set for 1:00 p.m.
  • Osborne’s two homeruns not enough as Cougar Softball drop two in Colorado to open 2014 season

    The Barton Community College softball team opened the 2014 season Wednesday in Colorado dropping a pair of games to host Lamar Community College. The Cougars dug an early hole in game one to lose 10-0 in five innings but battled tough in game two, eventually falling 8-5. Weather permitting, Barton will have their home opener on Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Cougar Field against Pratt Community College.

    Due to weather conditions, the Barton Community College softball team's games scheduled for today in Lamar, Colorado, have been moved to Thursday. The Cougars, under first-year coach Marc Benjamin, will look to make their 2014 debut by instead traveling on Thursday to Lamar for a 2:00 p.m. (CT) doubleheader against Lamar Community College.
  • Benjamin hired to lead Barton softball program

    Barton Community College recently approved the hiring of Marc Benjamin as head coach for the softball program. Benjamin comes to Barton from Southern Utah University, where he was the assistant coach for the Thunderbird softball team the past three seasons. Benjamin was recently hired to replace Heather Panning, who resigned her head coach position last month.
