Barton softball drop two against nationally ranked foes in Colby Tournament

Playing two ranked teams in the Colby Tournament held this past Saturday in Colby, Kansas, the Barton Community College softball team came out on the short end finishing the day with three losses.  The Lady Cougars opened play early Saturday afternoon surrendering an early two-run lead and giving up five runs in the final two innings to lose 13-7 to nationally receiving votes Western Nebraska Community College.   Barton had a chance for redemption from two losses to start the season getting the draw with Lamar Community College but a six-run sixth inning dismissed those chances as the Lady Cougars fell 10-2.  With Sunday's weather forecast looking dismal for continued play and wanting to at least get three games played during the trip out west, Barton immediately took the field following the loss to Lamar to take on No. 18 ranked Otero Junior College.  The Lady Cougars struck for two in the third to hold a 2-1 lead into the fourth before Otero scored four in the home half to assume control in route to the 6-3 win.  The three losses on the day dropped Barton to 18-15 on the season as the Lady Cougars will head back out to Colby on Wednesday for a pair of conference games beginning at 2:00 p.m.  Colby is 9-30 on the season and 1-11 in conference play while Barton will bring a 3-7 record into the contest.

Erica Harper batted .500 for the tournament going 5-10 including hitting a two-out two RBI homerun in the sixth inning against Western Nebraska tying her for the team lead with seven on the season.  Ashlyn Osborne took two losses in the circle to drop to 10-6 on the season while Jaelyn Monhollon dropped to 8-8 on the season taking the loss in the Otero game.
