The No. 17 ranked Barton Community College Wrestling team had their season cut a day short on Friday, coming up shy of Saturday’s all-american rounds in the NJCAA Wrestling National Championships held in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The Barton Community College Wrestling team finished runner-up on Saturday in Pratt, Kansas, in the NJCAA West/Central District Championships. The Cougars’ 134 points were second only to the 171.5 points from defending national champion and No. 3 ranked Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and well ahead of the 98.5 points scored by No. 16 ranked Labette Community College. Barton put four in the championship matches earning two titles coming in the 285 division from No. 8 Brix Brickey and in the 174 weight class from David Kelly who earned the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament award. The honor also marks the second straight year a Barton wrestler has earned the honor as Will Bardezbain won last season, as well as, Head Coach Mike Bammes earning the coaching award in the Cougars' first season. Barton also grabbed three third places and three fifth places with five of those coming via a Fall as nine of the ten wrestlers earned national tournament bids earning the Cougars' second straight Region VI Championship as well. Barton will next head to the NJCAA Championships in Council Bluffs, Iowa, held February 23-25 in the Mid-America Center.
The No. 19 ranked Barton Community College wrestling team continued its unblemished record over conference schools sweeping each of its duals held Saturday in Chanute, Kansas. The Cougars needed a pin in the first match of the day from 285 pound No. 8 nationally ranked Brix Brickey for a 23-22 victory over host Neosho County Community College before dispelling another conference foe Colby Community College 35-10. Barton swept their three matches of the Panther Duals with a 47-6 dominant win over Wentworth Military Academy. With the regular season complete, the Cougars have a couple of weeks in preparation of the NJCAA West/Central District Championships held Saturday, February 11, in Pratt, Kansas, with national tournament qualifications on the line.
Forfeiting two weight classes in each of their three duals Tuesday at the Barton Gym, the No. 19 ranked Barton Community College Wrestling team came out on top of its matches to win the second annual Cougar Duals. The Cougars allowed just six competitive team points in its opening match against Pratt Community College to win 30-18 but had to rally from four points down in its second match, winning the final two weight classes to pull off a 19-17 thrilling victory over nationally receiving votes Labette Community College. Consecutive pins in the 165 and 174 divisions followed by a technical fall in the 197 secured the victory as Barton would knock off No. 16 ranked Northwest Kansas Technical College 26-19 in the final match of the night. Kendall Biddle, David Kelly, and Ethan Dean each with 3-0 on the day as the Cougars outscored their three opponents 75-54. The Cougars will next compete this Sunday in the Kansas Cup at Fort Hays State University’s Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, Kansas.
The No. 19 Barton Community College Wrestling team nearly pulled off a top ten upset Friday in their opening match of the Midwest Duals in Kearney, Nebraska, before going 3-1 in the remaining matches of the one day event. Overall the Cougars outscored their five opponents 127-99 mixing in a victory over the No. 17 ranked team with their other loss coming to a No. 32 ranked NAIA level opponent to bring their season dual record to 4-6.
The Barton Community College Wrestling squad participated in the NJCAA Nationals Duals on Thursday in Fort Wayne, Indiana, taking on two fellow nationally ranked teams in the fifteen team tournament held at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The No. 18 Cougars took on No. 6 Clackamas Community College in the morning match dropping a 35-14 decision before being bounced from the tournament with a disappointing 28-21 loss to No. 9 Lincoln College. Barton will next return to the mat on Friday, January 13, in Kearney, Nebraska, in the Midwest Duals.
The Barton Community College wrestling team returned after a twenty day holiday break to the competitive mat Saturday in Fremont, Nebraska, participating in the in the Viking-Warrior Open hosted by Midland University. The No. 18 Cougars had eleven wrestlers finish 6-22 in their last Open event serving as a final tune-up for the dual portion of their 2016-17 schedule. Barton will next travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to compete in the NJCAA National Duals taking placing January 5-6.
The No. 18 ranked Barton Community College Wrestling team closed out the fall semester of the schedule Saturday traveling to Crete, Nebraska, for the Doane University Open.
The Barton Community College Wrestling team competed Saturday in the always tough Bob Smith Open hosted annually by Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. Fourteen Cougars took the mat finishing 15-28 in the one day nearly 400 athlete event consisting of teams from the NCAA Division I, II, NAIA, and junior college levels.
The Barton Community College Wrestling team competed in its second open tournament of the season taking to Kearney, Nebraska, on Saturday for the one-day UNK Holiday Inn Open. Going 9-3 in the 285 pound weight class, the Cougars finished the tournament 29-31 against a field of over 500 wrestlers from teams on the NCAA Division I, II, NAIA, and junior college levels.
The No. 20 Barton Community College Wrestling team fell to No. 10 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 41-6 in Tuesday’s dual in Miami, Oklahoma. Getting a defensive take down in the 197 weight class for their lone points, the Cougars Finding competition on the mat against the defending national champions a tough one, the Cougars’ lone points came in the 197 weight class getting a defensive pin. Barton will next return to the mat on Saturday as the Cougars head to Kearney, Nebraska for the UNK Holiday Inn Open.
No. 20 Barton Community College Wrestling took to the road on Wednesday returning home with a split of its two duals in Warrensburg, Missouri. The Cougars first took on NCAA Division II host University of Central Missouri, falling to the Mules 33-12, before dominating nationally receiving votes Wentworth Military Academy 56-0 in setting a program record for points in a dual. Barton will next return to the mats next Tuesday traveling to defending national champion and currently ranked No. 10 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in a 7:00 p.m. dual in Miami, Oklahoma.
Coming off an inaugural season of finishing as the No. 15 ranked team in the nation, the Barton Community College Wrestling program began its second season of competition capturing two individual titles Sunday in the Dan Harris Open at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas. The Cougars finished the one-day event 35-27 adding two runner-up, a third place, and a pair of fourth places competing against fellow junior college competitors, as well as, competition from the NCAA Division II and NAIA levels.
