Brickey third place finish leads Cougar Wrestling at UNK Holiday Inn Open

The No. 20 ranked Barton Community College Wrestling team competed in its second open tournament of the season taking to Kearney, Nebraska, on Saturday for the one-day UNK Holiday Inn Open.  Going 9-3 in the 285 pound weight class, the Cougars finished the tournament 29-31 against a field of over 500 wrestlers from teams on the NCAA Division I, II, NAIA, and junior college levels.

Leading the Cougars was third place finish from Brix Brickey in the 285 pound division.  The redshirt freshman went 6-1 on the day scoring three pins, a major decision, and two decisions to get the medal stand.  Getting a first round bye the Lindsborg native pinned Concordia's Tommy Andrews in 1:35 before racking up a 14-2 major decision over Gabe Rednose of Otero Junior College.   Brickey's run on the championship side of the bracket quickly came to an end in the quarterfinals falling to Iowa Western Community College's Stephen Boone in fifty-one seconds.  Brickey then went on to get consecutive pins, the first coming against Region VI foe Gabriel Ledesma of Colby Community College (2:52) before ending the day of Shane Coombs from Colorado State University-Pueblo in 4:38.   Advancing to the semifinals Brickey earned a hard fought 4-1 win over Chadron State's unattached Alex Mai before capturing the third placing with a 5-1 win over Ian Cheatum of the Colorado School of Mines.

Fellow 285 teammate Forrest Lalaguna also put together a good run bouncing back from a 1-0 decision in the opening round to Nebraska Wesleyan University's Justin Hennessy.  Receiving a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket, Lalaguna pinned his next two opponents the first coming at 4:07 over Nebraska-Kearney's Aaron Griffith followed by a late 6:48 pin of Andrew Wilson wrestling unattached for Chadron State.  Lalaguna would then move into the fourth round disposing of Bradon Huntley 7-0 wrestling unattached from Pratt Community College before falling to an early third period pin to Coombs in 5:15.

Freshman David Kelly continued his strong start to the season advancing to the quarterfinals before dropping consecutive matches to finish at 2-2 in the 174 pound division.  Picking up a first round by, Kelly had consecutive pins of Pratt's James Ellis (4:20) and Concordia's Tristain Sichmeller (4:14) before having his run halted with a last second pin in the quarters to Drew Hinkle of The Mines.  Being bounced to the consolation sixth round, Kelly's day came to an end with an 8-5 defeat Western State Colorado University's unattached Garrett Strang.

Caysen Smith went 4-2 on the day in the 133 stringing four victories together ending the tournament in the consolation seventh round.  Receiving a first round bye, Smith took a 17-1 technical fall loss to Wyoming's Trent Olsen being sent to the consolation side of the bracket.  After getting a bye, Smith began his run with consecutive falls over Adams State's Sage Budd (3:04) and Baker's Tyler Brown (5:36) before scoring a 5-0 win over Morningside's Alexander Pearson.  Smith's final victory would cone on his third pin of the day taking care of Fort Hays State University's Wyatt Alvis in 1:51.  Morningside's Alexander Schmitz would end Smith's day one round shy of the consolation semifinals with a 10-6 win.
