The No. 18 ranked Barton Community College Wrestling team closed out the fall semester of the schedule Saturday traveling to Crete, Nebraska, for the Doane University Open.
The one-day event wasn't the best outing for Barton on the season taking on the NAIA loaded competition as five Cougars had a short day falling in both matches with six others going down in with 1-2 records.
Making a run on the championship side of the bracket, David Kelly followed his first round bye with a 10-9 decision over Briar Cliff University's Nathan Garcia before dispatching Maryville's Tyler Harrington 7-2 to reach the 174 pound quarterfinals. Kelly came seconds away from making the final but a last second turn of events ended the championship run coming up on a 5-4 defeat to Concordia's Walker Fisher. Kelly would then finish fourth overall losing by a twenty-two second pin to Maryville's unattached John Anderson.
No. 8 nationally ranked Brix Brickey also had a good day on the mat beginning with two pins before losing in the quarterfinals of the 285 weight class. Brickey took care of Doane's Jacob Smith in 1:37 in the opening match followed by a 2:30 dispatching of Concordia University's Christopher James before getting sent to the consolation bracket with a 6-3 decision to University of Nebraska at Kearney's Aaron Griffith. Brickey then pinned his third opponent of the day taking care of Maryville University's unattached Logan Radik in 2:19 but the day would come to an end in the consolation semifinals with a 7-4 loss to Northwest Kansas Technical College's Odgerek Bathishig.
Assistant Coach and former Cougar Kade Sander returned to the mat for the first time since coming up just shy of All-American status last season, wrestling unattached and capturing the 157 championship including three three decisive victories. Receiving a first round bye, Sander pinned Dustin Monroe of Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1:25 before earning a hard fough 5-4 decision over unattached Luke Webster. Piling up the points over Briar Cliff's Leland Slawson, Sander marched on to the finals with a 19-0 technical fall before earning the title with a 2:47 fall over unattached Liam Corbett.
The Cougars return to Nebraska after the holiday break traveling to Midland for the December 31 Viking-Warrior Open hosted by Midland University.
