The Barton Community College Wrestling team competed Saturday in the always tough Bob Smith Open hosted annually by Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. Fourteen Cougars took the mat finishing 15-28 in the one day nearly 400 athlete event consisting of teams from the NCAA Division I, II, NAIA, and junior college levels.
Three Cougars made it to the third round of the championship bracket before getting bounced to the consolation side. Receiving a first round bye, David Kelly pinned his first 174 pound opponent of the day Kaleb Rippy of Ouachita Baptist University in 3:46. Kelly then got outpointed to the eventual fourth place finisher Miguel Barreras of Central Oklahoma in a high scoring 15-12. Kelly's day came to an end in the following match losing 9-5 of Western State unattached wrestler Garrett Strang.
Ethan Dean also had a similar day to Kelly beginning his day's quest in the 197 division with a bye before racking up a 16-0 technical fall over Caleb Matthews of OBU. The next two matches put a quick end to Dean's day getting pinned in 1:03 by Western State's Mick Dougharity before a 1:39 fall to Logan Searle of Nebraska-Kearney in the consolation bracket.
Finishing third in his last Open tournament, Brix Brickey also received a bye in his first round match before advancing in the 285 pound division with a 4:14 fall over Labette Community College's Anthony Ottinger. Brickey was bounced in the third round by a 16-1 technical fall to the eventual fourth place finisher Patrick Grayson of Nebraska but unlike Kelly and Dean, Brickey stayed alive on the consolation side registering a 3:40 fall over Drury University's Cody Curnutt before his day would come to an end in the fifth round dropping a 5-4 decision to Oklahoma's Vincent Spalitto.
Christian Rivas also reached the fifth round of the consolation side of the bracket winning three matches of the 157 division in decisive fashion. Taking a 19-2 technical fall first round loss to Central Oklahoma's Bryan Dutton, Rivas had a long break from the mat receiving a bye in the consolation round one before earning a 9-3 win over Preston Golden of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Rivas then pinned his next two opponents, Zach Duwe of Newman University (4:47) and Ty Wilson of Kansas Wesleyan University (2:50) before having his day come to an end with a 12-2 major decision to third place finisher Jake Elliott of Wyoming.
