Barton Wrestling open season with two individual titles

Coming off an inaugural season of finishing as the No. 15 ranked team in the nation, the Barton Community College Wrestling program began its second season of competition capturing two individual titles Sunday in the Dan Harris Open at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas.  The Cougars finished the one-day event 35-27 adding two runner-up, a third place, and a pair of fourth places competing against fellow junior college competitors, as well as, competition from the NCAA Division II and NAIA levels.

The Cougars picked up two of their placings in the 285 division in the all-Barton final between redshirt freshman Brix Brickey and Colorado freshman Forrest Lalaguna.  Brickey, who stormed his way to the final with three straight falls, defeated his teammate 3-1 with a sudden victory for the title.  After receiving a first round bye, Lalaguna earned two falls on the way to the championship match giving the Cougars five falls in the division.

Wichita's David Kelly also had an impressive collegiate debut taking first place in the 174 division.  Picking up a 2:41 fall in the first round, Kelly went on to score a 14-3 major decision before coming out on top of a tough 3-0 battle over Joshua Ortiz from Baker University in the semifinals.  Kelly would again have to face another home Wildcat in the finals earning the title with a 4:09 fall over John Hughes.

In addition to Lalaguna's runner-up finish, Caysen Smith also earned a second place standing losing to Baker's Tyler Dickman in the 133 finals with a 2:50 fall.  Smith's road to the title match began with a bye before chalking up consecutive major decisions (10-2 and 12-0) prior to earning a 7-5 semifinal battle over Demone McClinton from Pratt Community College.

Great Bend's Cody Liles gave the Cougars two placers in the 133 division reaching the third place match with a 9-1 major decision before dropping an 8-4 match to Bethany College's Ty Kolterman in the third place match.  Following a first round bye, Liles made his collegiate debut shutting out Pratt's Justin Skerce before earning a hard fought 7-5 score of Drury University's Zach McCollough.  Liles' run through the championship bracket came to an end in the semifinals as eventual winner Dickman racked up an 8-1 victory sending Liles to the consolation side.  Liles bounced backed to get himself into top four piling up a 9-1 major decision over unattached wrestler Brandon Dofat.

The Cougars piled up forty-three points in the 174 division as Trent Miles outdueled teammate Devon Baker in the third place match 8-2.  After earning the first of four falls on the day, Miles was bounced to the consolation bracket 7-0 to eventual runner-up Hughes of Baker before storming his way to the third place match.  Baker's path was similar in earning a first round fall before dropping his quarterfinal match 4-2 to Baker's Joshua Ortiz.  Baker went on to earn consecutive falls before outscoring Baker's Nick Moore 13-7 in the consolation semifinals.
