Barton Wrestling takes on national programs at NJCAA Duals

The Barton Community College Wrestling squad participated in the NJCAA Nationals Duals on Thursday in Fort Wayne, Indiana, taking on two fellow nationally ranked teams in the fifteen team tournament held at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.  The No. 18 Cougars took on No. 6 Clackamas Community College in the morning match dropping a 35-14 decision before being bounced from the tournament with a disappointing 28-21 loss to No. 9 Lincoln College.  Barton will next return to the mat on Friday, January 13, in Kearney, Nebraska, in the Midwest Duals.

Barton took forfeited losses in the 125 pound division putting the Cougars in a six point hole to begin each match.  The Cougars trailed 20-0 against Clackamas headed to the 157 division when Christian Rivas built a 4-2 first period lead before holding on for a 5-4 victory over Joshua Beckler.   Rivas would be one of only two Cougars to win both their matches on the day as the Great Bend freshman scored a third period takedown in his match against Lincoln's Shaylan Loomis to gain the lead but was forced to extra time as Loomis earned a point on riding time.  The duo battled through three overtime periods before Rivas earned the win improving to 2-0 in dual matches on the year.

David Kelly also had a good day with two victories beginning with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Clackamas' Colt Doyle.  Trailing 9-0 into the third period, Kelly took down Doyle tacking on a four point near fall before ending the match with a pin coming at the 6:08 mark.  Kelly capped his day with another fall, breaking a scoreless deadlock with third period reversal then pinning Lincoln's Haggen Meyer in 5:27 to improve to 3-1 in duals.

Barton got their final points of the Clackamas match in the 285 pound division as No. 8 ranked Brix Brickey rolled up a six point first period lead enroute to a 9-0 lead to the third before piling on the points for a 15-0 tech fall against Kyle Anderegg.

Bounced to the consolation side of the bracket from the loss to Clackamas, the Cougars again found themselves in a deep hole trailing 19-0 before Rivas' overtime victory in the 157.  Barton would storm back into the match getting consecutive pins from Kendall Biddle in the 165 and Kelly's in 174 to draw within five headed to the 184 division.

Devon Baker, who nearly pulled the upset against No. 5 Haszell West losing 4-3 earlier in the day, took on his second ranked opponent of the day in No. 3 ranked Tyree Overton.  Baker trailed 2-0 after the first but the deficit swelled to 8-0 in the second and 10-0 in the third before Overton sealed the win with a 5:50 pin.

Having forfeited the 125, the Cougars got the points back in the 197 as Ethan Dean picked up the win courtesy of a forfeit putting Barton within striking distance of an upset trailing by four.

With Drama unfolding in the final match of the day with the narrow team score margin, the 285 division was also a battle of two ranked wrestlers with Brickey taking on No. 6 Matthew Kent.  Kent took the early lead with a takedown but Brickey countered with an escape and takedown to gain the edge.  Following a scoreless second period with Brickey leading 3-2, the Lindsborg redshirt freshman was on the way to a victory but Kent pulled off a late near fall to theft a 6-3 win and finishing off the Lincoln seven point team margin.
