  • Plank leads four Cougars to receive national academic award
    June 24, 2015
    In a Wednesday release from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) office, ten Barton Community College student-athletes received NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards, formerly known as the NJCAA's Academic All-American award. The ten Cougars were amongst the NJCAA record 2,036 sophomore level student-athletes to receive the award.
  • Barton Baseball earns two Gold Glove honors, land three on All-Conference Team

    The Barton Community College baseball team earned two of the nine Golden Glove Awards and landed three players on the KJCCC All-Conference Western Division Team announced recently. Sophomores Jordan Plank and Trevor Turner headline the defensive awards while Evan McDonald earned second team All-Conference honors with Plank being joined by freshman Lance White landing on the honorable mention selection list.
  • Barton Baseball teams up with the Big Bend Batters Box to offer Skills Camp June 8-10

    The Barton Community College baseball team and the Big Bend Batters Box are teaming up to conduct a three day baseball skills camp June 8-10. Available for ages seven through fourteen years old, participants will get instruction on all aspects of the game. Cost is $50 per person or $65 if received after June 1st. Walk-ups are welcome although pre-registration is encouraged.
  • Barton Baseball’s season crushed on walk-off, drop two at No. 19 Neosho County

    The Barton Community College baseball team had its 2015 season come to an end Saturday as the Cougars dropped two games at No. 19 Neosho County Community College. Surrendering a 2-1 ninth inning lead, the Cougars dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 game in the opener and never fully recovered from the walk-off in the nightcap falling 16-6. The pair of losses caps the season at 26-27 under first year Head Coach Brent Biggs.
  • Barton Baseball closes out regular season with sweep of first place Saints

    The Barton Community College baseball team closed out the regular season Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field with a doubleheader sweep of Seward County Community College. The Cougars scored six in the second inning but had to hold off a Saints rally including a seven run fourth holding on for a 10-9 victory in the opener. In the nightcap Barton outlasted Seward County 5-2 in an error fest nine inning victory in the season’s final game on the home turf. Barton finishes the regular season in sixth place in the Jayhawk West at 16-16 and 26-25 overall while the West champion Saints end the regular season at 21-11 in conference and 32-22 overall.

    Due to Friday's evening's rain, today's Barton Community College baseball games vs Seward County Community College have changed start time and location. The doubleheader first pitch time has been moved back to 3:00 p.m., as well as, the location has moved to be played at Larks Park in Hays, Kansas.
  • Cougars can’t hold off Seward County’s Jayhawk West title run, drop first two games of series

    Just when it looked like the Barton Community College baseball team might prevent Seward County Community College from wrapping up the Jayhawk West title, the Saints struck back for a doubleheader sweep Saturday. Played at Larks Park in Hays, Kansas, on the artificial turf due to Friday evening’s rain in Great Bend, the Saints looked like a home team on a mission scoring four unanswered in the last two innings in a come from behind 9-7 win in the opener then took advantage of a short right field porch with five homeruns and fifteen stranded Cougar base runners to win 12-5 in the nightcap. The pair of losses damper the hopes of moving up in the finals standings dropping to 14-16 in the West and 24-25 while the Saints improved to 21-9 and 32-20. The teams will wrap up the remaining two games and round out the regular season Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
  • Barton Baseball winds down regular season, finale events set for Sunday

    Twenty eight games gone on the conference schedule but none are more important now for the Barton Community College baseball team than upcoming four games left in the regular season. In a tight Jayhawk West race, the 14-14 Cougars find themselves in sixth place but only one game out of third heading into this weekend’s finale against the 19-9 first place Saints of Seward County Community College. With Seward needing two wins to secure a share of the Jayhawk West title and the Cougars vying for a top four finish, high stakes will be on the line as the teams square off in a pair of 1:00 p.m. doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field.
  • Barton Baseball gets split, keeps region home berth alive heading into final series

    The Barton Community College baseball team got one of the games they needed Tuesday in Pratt but couldn’t come up with a sweep as the Cougars dropped the four-game series with Pratt Community College 3-1. Losing both of Monday’s games, Barton rallied from three down in Tuesday’s first game scoring eight unanswered to win 10-5 but a six-run second inning doomed the Cougars in the nightcap falling 9-1. Sitting in sixth place at 14-14 in Jayhawk West play, the 24-23 Cougars are just a game back for third place while Pratt stands a game behind Barton in seventh at 13-15 and 20-27 on the season. Barton wraps up regular season play this weekend with regional playoff seeding implications as conference leader Seward County Community College (19-9, 30-19) comes to town for a four game series as the Saints are red hot following a four game sweep of former leader Butler Community College. First pitch for doubleheader play on Saturday and Sunday scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Lawson-Biggs Field with special events planned on Sunday. All games are free admission with a $5 cookout scheduled at noon Sunday in kicking off the final day of regular season with a special Bowman Family Press Box recognition ceremony taking place prior to first pitch.
  • Hot hitting Cougars pound Brown Mackie, prepare for conference stretch

    The Barton Community College baseball team took care of Brown Mackie College Wednesday in Salina winning 11-0 in seven innings. Breaking open the game with four second inning runs, the Cougars pounded fifteen hits in eclipsing the ten hit mark for the seventh straight game. The non-conference victory improves Barton to 23-20 on the season while dropping the Lions to 7-32. Returning to conference action this weekend, the fourth place 13-11 Cougars have worked themselves into a position for a top four spot for the playoffs but first have to turn attention to the 17-26 and 10-14 seventh place Beavers of Pratt Community College. Weather permitting the four game weekend series’ first pitch in Pratt will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Comeback falls short in series finale but Barton Baseball takes three of four over Hutchinson

    The magic in the comeback kids fell just short as the Barton Community College baseball team lost 9-6 Sunday to Hutchinson Community College. Pulling out three come-from-behind wins in the series’ first three games, the Cougars rallied from four down only to have the Blue Dragons respond with three in the final two innings to avoid Barton’s hopes of a sweep. The loss drops Barton to 22-20 on the season as Hutchinson improves to 27-16 moving alongside the Cougars into the fourth spot at 13-11 and two games from first place amidst the muddled Jayhawk West standings. Barton will step aside from conference play with a 5:00 p.m. Wednesday contest at Brown Mackie College before a three-day four-game conference series at Pratt Community College.
  • Barton Baseball rallies for two walk-off victories in taking 3-0 series lead over Hutchinson

    If Friday night’s series opener wasn’t thrilling enough for the fans, Saturday’s twin bill at Lawson-Biggs Field exceeded the thrill and not for the faint of heart as the Barton Community College baseball team came away with two come-from-behind walk off victories over Hutchinson Community College. The Cougars battled back from a four-run deficit in the first game to eventually get an extra inning walk off hit in the eighth claiming a 6-5 victory then recovered from a 6-0 nightcap deficit scoring three in the bottom of the seventh to win 13-12. Beginning the series in sixth place, the 13-10 and 22-19 Cougars slip into the fourth spot of the Jayhawk West standings while sliding Hutchinson from the second spot to sixth at 12-11 and 26-16. The teams conclude the series on Sunday with a scheduled nine inning contest beginning at 2:00 p.m.
  • Hot hitting Cougars take first game of pivotal series with 8-5 win over Hutchinson

    It wasn’t the low scoring pitcher’s duel it was set up to be as the Barton Community College baseball team outslugged the Blue Dragons of Hutchinson Community College Friday night at Lawson-Biggs Field taking the first game of the weekend four-game series 8-5. Putting together their third straight ten-plus hit game, the Cougars outhit the Blue Dragons 15-13 as the teams heated up in the middle innings scoring a combined thirteen runs in 3.5 innings. With a hotly contested race for the Jayhawk West title in progress, the Cougars remain in sixth place just two games in the loss column from the top spot at 11-10 and 20-19 overall while Hutchinson slips from second into fourth at 12-9 and 26-14 on the season. The teams will resume the series with a pair of seven inning contests on Saturday before wrapping up the four game series with another nine inning game on Sunday. First pitch for both days set for 2:00 p.m.
  • Barton baseball cruises in non-conference rout, pivotal conference series approaching

    The Barton Community College baseball team scored in every inning Tuesday at Lawson-Biggs Field dispatching the junior varsity squad from Bethany College 16-2 in seven innings. The victory moves Barton back to the .500 mark at 19-19 on the season heading into a pivotal four-game three-day series hosting Hutchinson Community College beginning on Friday. Just two games in the loss column out of first place, the sixth place 10-10 Cougars and first place 12-8 and 24-13 Blue Dragons will begin play with a nine inning contest at 6:00 p.m. Friday before playing a pair of seven inning Saturday games at 2:00 p.m. and wrapping the series with another nine inning game at 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
  • Cougars take the nine-inning games in splitting weekend series at Garden City

    The Barton Community College baseball team concluded their four-game series in Garden City with a split Saturday to earn a series split with Garden City Community College. The Broncbusters took both the seven inning contests by 12-2 and 10-4 scores while the Cougars took the nine inning nightcaps each day 5-3 and 14-9. The series leaves Barton at 10-10 in the Jayhawk West and 18-19 on the season while Garden City stands at 14-10 and 24-16. The Cougars will step out of conference play Tuesday for a 5:00 p.m. nine-inning contest hosting the junior varsity from Bethany College before turning attention to a pivotal four-game three-day series hosting Hutchinson Community College beginning at 6:00 p.m. Friday.
  • Cougars drop non-conference contest to Hesston, Larks’ Fowler hits for the cycle

    Taking a break from the conference grind, the Barton Community College baseball team stepped out of conference play Wednesday taking a 13-2 game shortened seven inning loss to Hesston College at Lawson-Biggs Field. The Larks only outhit the Cougars by two in the contest but made the most of their eight hits including a fifth inning grand slam to cruise to the victory. The victory improves Hesston to 12-12 on the season while dropping the Cougars below the .500 mark at 16-17. The Cougars, tied for fifth in the Jayhawk West at 8-8, will head to second place Garden City Community College who sits in second place at 12-8 and 22-14 on the season for the weekend’s four-game conference series. Day one of the series will have a 3:00 p.m. first pitch for Friday’s doubleheader with Saturday’s twin bill beginning at 1:00 p.m.
  • Barton Baseball and Dodge City split weekend series

    Splitting Saturday’s doubleheader, the Barton Community College and Dodge City Community College baseball teams split another pair of games Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field to wrap up the four game series. Dodge City scored runs in five of the first game’s seven innings to win 8-4 but the Cougars salvaged the split with two three-run innings to win 8-6. The weekend leaves Barton in fifth place at 8-8 in Jayhawk conference play and 16-16 overall while Dodge City leaves town in the conference second spot at 12-8 and 22-10 overall. The Cougars will step out of conference play Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. nine-inning contest hosting Hesston College before heading to Garden City on Friday for the weekend’s four-game conference series.
  • Cougars and Conquistadors split Saturday doubleheader

    The Barton Community College and Dodge City Community College baseball teams split a pair of games Saturday at Lawson-Biggs Field as the Cougars took the opener 5-1 before the Conquistadors took the nightcap 8-5. Barton rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to capture game one but committed eight errors in the nightcap as Dodge City put the game away with three eighth inning runs. The Cougars moved to 7-7 in conference play and 15-15 overall while Dodge City goes to 11-7 and 21-9. The teams wrap up the four-game series with another 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday.
  • Cougar Baseball scores early and often in 14-3 non-conference win

    The Barton Community College baseball team stepped out of conference play Tuesday night taking care of the junior varsity squad from Kansas Wesleyan University 14-3 in a game shortened seven innings. After a first inning Coyote two run blast left Lawson-Biggs Field, the Cougars responded with eight unanswered and scored in each inning cruising to the victory improving to 14-14 on the season. The Cougars, 6-6 in conference play, return to Jayhawk West play this weekend against the 10-6 and 19-7 Dodge City Community College conquistadors. First pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Lawson-Biggs field for both Saturday and Sunday’s doubleheader.
  • Cougars find long ball in Sunday sweep, split weekend series at MCC-Longview

    Not normally a long ball hitting team, the Barton Community College baseball team blasted five homeruns in sweeping Sunday’s doubleheader at MCC-Longview in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Barton went deep four times in the opener to win 11-7 then used solid pitching in the nightcap to win 11-2. The victories erased the memories of the Lakers’ 9-0 and 13-8 sweep on Saturday as MCC-Longview held the Cougars to one hit in the opener before outscoring Barton in the nightcap 13-8. Barton exits Missouri at 13-14 on the season while MCC-Longview ends the weekend at 11-12. The Cougars will remain out of conference play for a Tuesday 5:00 p.m. nine inning game hosting the junior varsity squad from Kansas Wesleyan University before next weekend’s conference series at Lawson-Biggs Field versus Dodge City Community College.

    The Barton Community College baseball team dropped Saturday’s doubleheader in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, falling to the host MCC-Longview 9-0 and 13-8. Held to one hit in the opener, the Cougars outhit the Lakers 14-12 in the nightcap to drop the first two of the weekend’s four game series. Barton falls to 11-14 on the season while MCC-Longview improves to 11-10 going into Sunday’s noon doubleheader.
  • Barton Baseball salvages doubleheader at Colby

    Bouncing back from a loss in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader in Colby, the Barton Community College baseball team salvaged the split at Colby Community College. The Cougars were shut down and limited to three hits in the first game losing 3-0 but responded with thirteen hits in the nightcap in winning 7-5. Having to split the original four game series into two different dates consisting of doubleheaders, Barton took three games in the series having won the first two games of the series last Wednesday knocking off the Trojans 3-1 and 9-4. Barton remains at the .500 mark in conference play at 6-6 with a season’s record of 11-12 while Colby goes to 3-9 in Jayhawk play and 9-13 overall. The Cougars will stay on the road for their next series heading to MCC-Longview Community College for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a noon first pitch for Sunday’s twin bill.

    The Barton Community College baseball team concluded their four-game series in El Dorado with a split Sunday at Butler Community College. The Cougars built a four run lead but needed a seventh inning run to win game one 7-6 but a six-run Butler third inning in the nightcap led a to seven inning shortened game 10-0 loss. On Saturday, the Cougars dropped the first game scheduled for seven innings as Butler came through with a walk-off double in the eighth inning to win 2-1 as each team could only muster three hits apiece. In game two the Grizzlies came out on the top end of a 3-2 victory as the Cougars stranded eight on base. The series leaves Barton at 5-5 in the Jayhawk West and 10-11 on the season while Butler remains atop the standings at 6-2 and 14-8 overall.

In the night cap the Grizzlies came out on the top end of a 3-2 victory as the Cougars stranded eight on base.   • Bats come alive as Barton Baseball pitching dominates in doubleheader sweep at Colby

    The Barton Community College baseball team picked up a conference doubleheader sweep Wednesday at Colby Community College. The Cougars got a pair of solid starting pitching performances behind sophomore Jordan Plank to win 3-1 and freshman Cody Brewer in game two getting the help of the Barton bats pounding out twelve hits in blasting the Trojans 9-4. Barton improves to 9-8 on the season and 4-2 in the Jayhawk West while dropping Colby to 7-9 on the season and 1-5 in the Jayhawk West. The Cougars will next head back to the road traveling to El Dorado, Kansas, for a weekend four-game series at Butler Community College. First pitch for each day’s doubleheader schedule for 1:00 p.m.
  • Cougars finish the weekend strong, split Sunday’s doubleheader with Cloud County

    The Barton Community College baseball team and Cloud County Community College battled to another doubleheader split Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field. Committing five errors resulting in five unearned runs in Saturday’s first game, again the Cougars had a game to forget giving up four unearned on three errors in losing game one 10-4. Regrouping for game two, Barton pounded out a season high fourteen hits in running away with a game shortened seven inning 15-2 victory. The split takes Barton to 7-8 on the season and 2-2 in the Jayhawk West while Cloud County goes to 7-12 on the season and 3-5 in the Jayhawk West. Due to earlier postponement of a weekend conference series at Colby Community College due to the weather conditions, Barton has restructured its mid-week schedule canceling non-conference games. In place of, Barton will travel to Colby on Wednesday to make-up up two of the four postponed games with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.

    It wasn’t the start to the conference season the Barton Community College baseball team was looking for but the Cougars regrouped to split Saturday’s doubleheader with Cloud County Community College. Committing five errors resulting in five unearned runs, Barton dropped game one 8-2 but behind solid pitching and better defense prevailed in the nightcap 4-2. The Cougars move to 6-7 on the season while Cloud County goes to 6-11 on the season and 2-4 in the Jayhawk West. The two teams will return to Lawson-Biggs field for another doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.

    Getting the scoring output the Barton Community College baseball team has been searching for in the early season, the Cougars couldn’t keep up with the junior varsity squad of Fort Hays State University in losing 17-7 Wednesday in Hays. Barton put runs on the board in five of the nine innings and outslugged the Tigers 12-10, but four errors and eight walks led to the ten run loss. Barton drops to 5-6 on the season heading into this weekend’s weather permitting conference opener at Colby Community College. First pitch for each day’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
  • Barton shut out for first time, Cougars drop rubber match to No. 20 Des Moines

    The Barton Community College baseball team struggled at the plate Saturday at Lawson-Biggs Field in dropping a 5-0 contest with Division II No. 20 Des Moines Area Community College. The Bears jumped on Barton with two first inning runs then tacked on three more in the fourth to take the rubber match of the three-game series. Barton drops to 5-5 on the season while Des Moines leaves Great Bend reaching the .500 mark at 3-3. The Cougars will have a mid-week game with the junior varsity squad at Fort Hays State University in Hays at 4:00 p.m. before turning attention to the conference opener next weekend at Colby Community College.
  • Cougars bounce back to split doubleheader with No. 20 Des Moines

    The Barton Community College baseball team split another doubleheader during this early portion of the season Friday at Lawson-Biggs Field battling Division II No. 20 Des Moines Area Community College. The Cougars nearly pulled off a four-run deficit comeback in the first game rallying for three runs in the sixth but fell just short 5-4. Behind solid pitching and three first inning runs, the Cougars defeated the Bears in the nightcap 5-1. Splitting all four of their season’s doubleheaders, Barton stands at 5-4 on the season while DMACC moves to 2-3. Weather permitting the teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with a nine inning game set for 12:00 p.m.
