Stanford throwing out of Cleveland bullpen; two more former Cougars in minors
July 13, 2007The list of former Barton County Community College Cougars playing pro baseball got a little longer this past month as two more ex players were draft in the 2007 draft. That brought the total to 9 the number of former Cougars in pro baseball with Jason Stanford currently at the Major League level throwing out of the Cleveland Indians bullpen. In addition to Stanford, Nate Field has also spent a brief time in the big leagues this season and is having a great season at AAA for the Florida Marlins. -
Barton gets several players honored on All-Jayhawk West teams
May 11, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team had 9 players selected to the All-Jayhawk West teams, highlighted by a pair of 1st team selection. David Wilson and Anthony Dreiling were 1st team selection for the Cougars while 4 more were picked to the 2nd team and 3 more to honorable mention. Seward County swept the top honors for the players with Erik Hegsted being selected as the Player-of-the-Year and Christian Kowalchuk as the freshman of the year. Butler’s Steve Johnson was selected as the Coach of the Year. Butler and Seward tied for the Jayhawk West championship while Barton finished with the 3rd best record in the West – 3 games back.

Field gets call up to Florida Marlins
April 27, 2007The impressive spring turned in so far by former Barton County Community College baseball player Nate Field at AAA Albuquerque has turned into a spot on the Florida Marlins major league roster. Field got the call-up Wednesday and will be in uniform tonight when the Marlins travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies.

Cougars drop 3 of 4 in West play on the road during weekend
April 25, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team probably saw any hopes of earning the best record in the Jayhawk West come to an end over the weekend, dropping 3 of 4 games on the road in West play. Barton split games at Cloud County on Saturday then fell twice to Seward County on Sunday. Barton lost the opener at Cloud, 3-0 before winning 6-3 in the 2nd contest. Barton fell 6-3 and 4-1 to the Saints Sunday afternoon. Barton is now 15-11 in the West with 6 games to play. The Cougars are 29-21 overall. Seward leads the West with a 20-8 mark while Butler is close behind at 18-8. Barton will travel to Hutchinson Wednesday to end the season with home games against Pratt and Cloud over the weekend at Lawson-Biggs Field.

Barton splits baseball games at Hutchinson
April 25, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team split a pair of games on a damp day in Hutchinson, winning the opener and dropping the nightcap in Jayhawk West action. Barton pounded out 13 hits in the opening contest to earn an 11-4 win at Hobart-Detter Field but could only muster 4 hits in the 2nd contest, losing 3-0 to the Blue Dragons. The Cougars are now 16-12 in West play and 30-22 overall this year. Hutch is now 14-16 in the West and 27-23 overall. Barton will have 4 more West games to play before the end of its season. Those games will be at home this weekend as the Cougars host Pratt Saturday and Cloud Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field.

Field, Stanford impressive at AAA; Phillips, Lee fight injuries
April 24, 2007The baseball season is underway for the several former Barton County Community College baseball players. Two ex-Cougars are just one step from Major League Baseball as Nate Field and Jason Stanford – both of whom have thrown in the big leagues – are throwing at the AAA level. Jeff Christy, in his 1st full season in pro baseball, started the season for the Minnesota Twins Advanced A team while 3 others are fighting injuries and have not yet thrown their 1st pitch of the season.

Barton splits home West games with Garden
April 21, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team ran its Jayhawk West winning streak to 6 games with a win in the 1st game of a doubleheader Thursday at Lawson-Biggs Field but saw that streak end in the nightcap as the Garden City scored in the top of the 7th for the win. Barton won the opener by an 8-4 count then fell 4-3 in the 2nd game. The Cougars are now 14-8 in the West and 28-18 overall. Barton will have a pair of games this weekend as they travel to Cloud County and Seward County for West play.

Barton runs winning streak to 5 in West play
April 19, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team put itself back in contention in the Jayhawk West race as it ran its winning streak to 5 with sweeps at Garden and at home against Colby after splitting with West leader Butler. Barton, ineligible for the West title due to a department-wide probation, improved to 11-5 in the West and 25-15 overall. Barton lost at Butler to start the 6 games in 5 days over the Easter Holiday. Barton lost 6-0 then rebounded for a 9-3 win. That was followed by a sweep at Garden City, 5-3 and 12-4 before sweeping Colby at home, 9-8 and 10-0.

Cougars drop pair to Seward, roll to sweep at Pratt
April 19, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team has a sleuth of game in a short time thanks to the weather. Barton hosted a hastily switched twinbill Monday against Seward County then went on the road Tuesday for a rescheduled doubleheader at Pratt. Barton lost 2 to the Saints Monday but swept the Beavers Tuesday to go 2-2 over the 2 days. Barton is 13-7 in the Jayhawk West and 27-17 overall this season. The series of games continues through the next 2 weeks as Barton will play 7 more doubleheaders over the next 12 days.

Cougars sweep Dodge in West play
April 05, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team swept Dodge City for the 2nd time this season, earning 20-1 and 10-1 wins over the Conquistadors Wednesday afternoon at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend. The wins made it 3 straight for the Cougars, who also beat Brown Mackie Tuesday night by a 9-2 margin. Barton is now 20-14 overall this season and 6-4 in the West. The Cougars will embark on a 6-game, 4-day road trip over the Easter Break, starting with a doubleheader at Seward Friday. The Cougars then travel to El Dorado Saturday then after taking Easter Day off, will be in Garden City Monday. All games are West doubleheaders.

Cougars split conference games with Hutch
April 02, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team split a pair of Jayhawk West games with Hutchinson Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend. The Cougars rallied to win the opener with big innings in the 5th and 6th for a 9-5 win. Barton lost the nightcap on the strength on a big 4th inning by a 6-2 count. The split keeps Barton even in the West with a 4-4 mark while the Cougars are now 17-14 overall. Hutchinson is 7-5 in the West and 18-11 overall this year. It was the 1st time Barton had played 10 days, losing 3 doubleheaders to rain over that span. Barton will have make-up dates at Garden, at home against Cloud and at Seward due to the wet weather. The next action for Barton is Tuesday when Brown Mackie comes to Lawson-Biggs for a single 9-inning contest starting at 6 pm. Barton will be home for a twinbill Wednesday, hosting Dodge in West play.

Cougars close out season with 4 West wins at Lawson-Biggs Field
March 30, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team ended the season in impressive fashion this past weekend as the Cougars swept a pair of Jayhawk West opponents, scoring double figures in every game in the process at Lawson-Biggs Field. Barton won all 4 games in short-stint as the Cougars run-ruled Pratt twice in 5 innings, 15-0 and 15-4 before turning a similar trick on Cloud County Sunday, winning 16-2 and 13-3. Only the final game against went 6 innings. The Cougars close out their season winners of 5 of their finals 6 games and a 34-22 overall record. Barton finished with the 3rd best record in the West, posting a 20-12 mark – 3 games behind co-champs Butler County and Seward County. Sunday marked the final game for 14 Barton sophomores, who were recognized between games.

Barton splits conference match up against Colby, take spring trip to Texas
March 29, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team kept their conference record even on their second Jayhawk Conference road trip. The Cougars traveled to Colby to take on the Trojans. Barton dropped a close game one by a score of 4-3 before evening things up in the second contest 7-3. The Cougars moved to an even 3-3 in conference play with a 14-9 record overall. The baseball team also spent spring break in Texas, playing 6 games in 3 days. The trip started with losses to Howard College before getting on track with wins over Dodge City and Midland. The Cougars finished up in Texas with two losses to Odessa College, returning to Great Bend with a record of 16-13.

Former Cougars finding their spots in pro baseball
March 29, 2007As spring training winds to a close for Major League Baseball and enters the final stages for minor league baseball, 6 former Barton County Community College players will be finding out soon where they will call home to start the 2007 campaign. One former Cougar is vying to make a roster spot in the Big Leagues, while another has locked up a spot in AAA. The 4 most recent Cougars to play in the pros will be finding out soon where their minor league stops will begin for the summer.

Barton sweeps NO-Enid and Brown Mackie
March 18, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team rolled to 3 wins this past week, defeating Northern Oklahoma-Enid twice and Brown Mackie once – all on the road. The Cougars won at Enid by scores of 19-2 and 7-2 then knocked in 15 runs in a 15-5 win in Salina. The wins move Barton’s winning streak to 5 as the Cougars improved to 11-6 overall this season.

Barton sweeps Dodge to open conference play; win streak at 8
March 18, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team made it 8 straight wins with a sweep of Dodge City to open Jayhawk West play Saturday in Dodge City. The Cougars rallied for the win in the opener, scoring 6 times in the 7th for the 9-3 win. Barton coasted to an 11-1, 5-inning win in the 2nd game to improve to 13-6 overall and 2-0 in the West.

Cougars winning streak ends; Butler sweeps Barton in West action
March 18, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team saw its 8-game winning streak snapped with a doubleheader loss to Butler County Wednesday at Lawson-Biggs Field in the Cougars’ West home-opener. Barton’s offense, which had produced 4 double digits games during the 8-game winning streak and was averaging 10 runs a game over that same span, was shut down by the Butler pitching staff. The Cougars lost 7-1 and 6-1 to fall to 13-8 overall and 2-2 in the West.

Cougars win 3 of 4 over Western Nebraska
March 11, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team opened its home season by taking 3 of 4 games from Western Nebraska, improving to 8-5 on the season with the series win. The Cougars lost the opener, 6-3 before winning the final 3. Barton gained a split on the 1st day, winning 3-0 in the nightcap, the swept Western the following day, 12-2 and 4-3. The teams used wood bats during the series at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend.

Barton picks up impressive wins in Arizona to start season
March 08, 2007The Barton County Community College baseball team got its season off to a good start in Arizona, going 5-5 on the trip, knocking off some of the top teams in junior college. The Cougars split with No. 5 ranked Chandler-Gilbert (Ariz) and beat the defending NJCAA National Runner-up Yavapai (Ariz) it the teams only meeting.
