Barton splits home West games with Garden
The Barton County Community College baseball team ran its Jayhawk West winning streak to 6 games with a win in the 1st game of a doubleheader Thursday at Lawson-Biggs Field but saw that streak end in the nightcap as the Garden City scored in the top of the 7th for the win. Barton won the opener by an 8-4 count then fell 4-3 in the 2nd game. The Cougars are now 14-8 in the West and 28-18 overall. Barton will have a pair of games this weekend as they travel to Cloud County and Seward County for West play.

Highlights
Barton trailed 2-0 in the 2nd inning of the opener then scored in the next 5 innings to grab the lead on Garden. Barton evened the score in the 2nd as David Wilson led off with a single and scored on a Kenny Burkhead double. Burkhead later scored on a ground out to make it 2-all. The Cougars took a 3-2 lead in the 3rd when Tyler Metcalf singled in Austin Holt. Barton pushed that lead to 6-2 with 3 more runs in the 4th. Holt and Anthony Dreiling each drove in runs in the inning.

After Garden trimmed the lead to 6-3, Barton's Mitch Cooper stole home in the 5th to make it 7-3. Garden scored again the top of the 6th but Barton countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a Burkhead single that scored Metcalf. Michael Bell picked up the win for Barton, tossing 5 innings while Erik Anderson pitched the final 2 innings, striking out 4 in the process. Holt, Dreiling, Metcalf, and Burkhead each had 2 hits and Burkhead drove in 2. Holt scored twice.

Barton jumped to a 3-1 lead in the 2nd game, scoring 3 times in the bottom of the 1st inning. Holt and Dreiling walked to start the game then Wilson hit a 3-run homer for the 3-0 lead. That, however, would be the end of the scoring for the Cougars. Garden scored twice in the 3rd to even the game at 3-all then added a run in the top of the 7th with 2 outs for the win. Barton puts its leadoff batter aboard in the 7th but couldn't move him. The Cougars managed just 4 hits in the contest.
