Barton splits baseball games at Hutchinson
The Barton County Community College baseball team split a pair of games on a damp day in Hutchinson, winning the opener and dropping the nightcap in Jayhawk West action. Barton pounded out 13 hits in the opening contest to earn an 11-4 win at Hobart-Detter Field but could only muster 4 hits in the 2nd contest, losing 3-0 to the Blue Dragons. The Cougars are now 16-12 in West play and 30-22 overall this year. Hutch is now 14-16 in the West and 27-23 overall. Barton will have 4 more West games to play before the end of its season. Those games will be at home this weekend as the Cougars host Pratt Saturday and Cloud Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field.

Highlights
Barton took a 3-0 in the opener, scoring twice in the 1st and once in the 3rd. Austin Holt scored the 1st run of the game on a passed ball and Anthony Dreiling scored on a sacrifice fly by David Wilson. Barton pushed it to 3-0 in the top of the 3rd when Tyler Metcalf doubled in Dreiling. Hutch rallied with 3 runs of its own in the bottom of the 3rd on 5 hits to make it a 3-all contest.

Barton answered right back, scoring 2 more in the 4th to take the lead for good. Tyler Rzpeka scored Mitch Cooper and Holt, who had a big game at the plate, doubled in Ty Stivers. Stivers drove in Wilson in the 5th for a 6-3 lead and Cougars opened things up in the 6th with 3 more runs as Dreiling singled in Holt and Marc Albers and later scored in the inning. Barton capped off the scoring with 2 runs in the 7th. Metcalf singled to score Rzepka and Holt scored again, this time on a Wilson single.

Holt finished the day 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored for the Cougars while Dreiling was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 3 runs. Wilson drove in 3 and Metcalf added 2 hits and 2 RBI. Michael Bell got the win for Barton, going the distance to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Things didn't go as well in the 2nd game as Barton never put more than 1 runner on base in any inning, hitting the ball hard at times, but collecting just 4 hits in the 3-0 loss. Kevin Large was the tough-luck loser, giving up just 4 hits in 4 innings as Hutch scored 3 unearned runs. Erik Anderson tossed the final two innings, shutting out the Blue Dragons.
