Brown, Davis, Grizzell round out in-state signees

Track stars have proven a good commodity for the Barton County Community College women’s basketball over the years. This year’s club had numerous high school track stars on it and next year’s team will as well. Add to that track/basketball combination Lataisha Brown from Garden City High School. The leading scorer on her high school basketball team, Brown is also one of the top long jumpers in the state. Brown will also participate in track at Barton. She will join transfer Lindsey Davis and Melissa Grizzell as the final pieces of the in-state recruiting for Coach Lane Lord for the upcoming season.

Barton sends 7 sophomores on to Division I level; 9 to play at 4-year level

Success on the court has turned into great opportunities for 8 sophomores and 1 freshman on the Barton County Community College basketball team. This past season Barton went 28-6 and the 2-year sophomores have a combined record of 50-18 the past two seasons. Now those players are moving on to continue their careers at the NCAA level. Of those 9 looking to continue their careers, 7 will do so at NCAA Division I schools. Two more will do so at NCAA Division II schools.

All-State guard from Bishop Carroll signs to Barton women

The City of Wichita has been good to the Barton County Community College women’s basketball program the past couple of years so it is no surprise Coach Lane Lord – a former high school coach in Wichita – has returned to Wichita to fill his roster again. This time he landed a 1st team All Class 5A guard in Bishop Carroll’s Jessica Halsig. Halsig led her team to a 21-4 record and a 4th place finish at the 5A State Tournament this past season. The 5-11 guard was also an All-City selection this past season.

Oklahoma All state point guard signs to play for Cougars

The signing period is off and running for Lane Lord and the Barton County Community College basketball team as he replaces 10 sophomores from this year’s Region VI Finalist. In fact, it was a class that was instrumental in making back-to-back appearances in the Region VI title game. The Cougars took a big step in replacing those departing sophomores by signing Latoya Jackson, an All-State performer from Oklahoma. Jackson, a point guard for Oklahoma City’s Millwood High School.

Lindley named Barton women’s basketball assistant coach

Chance Lindley has been selected as the Barton County Community College women’s basketball assistant coach, replacing Toni Gross, who is taking an assistant coaching position at Washburn University. Lindley comes to Barton from Wichita Collegiate School, where he guided the Spartans to the Class 3A state title this past season.

Cougars season ends in Region VI finals for 2nd straight season

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team made its 1st return trip to the Region VI finals for the 1st time in nearly 20 years, but once again, the Cougars season came to an end there. Barton’s quest for a return trip to the NJCAA Tournament for the 1st time since 2000 will have to wait at least one more year. Barton’s season ended when Colby defeated the Cougars, 67-62, in the Region VI title game Tuesday night at Koch Arena in Wichita. Barton ends its season with a 28-6 record while Colby, 31-3, moves on the to the NJCAA National Tournament for the 1st time in school history. The Cougars 28 wins give Coach Lane Lord 50 wins in his two seasons at the helm of the Cougars. The game was the final contest for 11 sophomores on the Cougars’ roster, 8 of which were playing in their 2nd season at Barton.

Barton back in Region VI finals with 78-61 win over Labette; Colby next

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team earned a repeat trip to the Region VI Championship game Monday afternoon with a 78-61 win over Labette at Koch Arena in Wichita. The No. 19 Cougars had to climb out of a 13-0 hole against the No. 14 Cardinals on their way to the win and a repeat trip the Region VI finals. Barton will take on a familiar team as the Cougars tangle with Jayhawk West foe Colby Tuesday for the right to move on to Salina and the NJCAA National Tournament. Barton turned a close contest into the 17-point win by pulling away late from the champions of the Jayhawk East. Barton will bring a 28-5 record into the title game while Colby, ranked No. 9, will bring a 30-3 mark into the contest. Tip for the contest will be at 6 pm at Koch Arena.

Barton holds off Allen County; headed to semifinals in Region VI

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team is back in a familiar place – sort of. Barton is back in the semifinals of the Region VI tournament after holding off Allen County, 65-59 Saturday, but it is different than last year. The venue has changed and did the roll of the Cougars in the quarterfinal game. Last season in Salina as Barton was making its way to the Region VI Championship game, the Cougars did it as an underdog. This time, on the floor of Koch Arena in Wichita, Barton was the favorite, and found itself fending off an underdog in Allen County. Barton was able to do just that after watching a double digit lead dwindle to 1 in the latter stages of the contest. The win gives the Cougars (27-5) a date in the semis with East Champion Labette, who rallied to defeat Seward in quarterfinal action. The game will be at 1 pm Monday.

Cougars roll to opening round win over Neosho; Allen County next

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team rolled to an easy win in the opening round of Region VI play, defeating Neosho County, 92-57, at the Barton County Gym Wednesday. The Cougars jumped to an early lead on the Panthers and never looked back. Barton led by 28 at half then coasted home for the win. It was the 2nd straight year Barton defeated Neosho in the opening round of Region VI action. Barton will move on to play Allen County, a 70-59 winner over Garden City Wednesday night. Barton (26-5) will take on Allen (19-12) at 3 pm in quarterfinal action at Koch Arena on the campus of Wichita State.

Barton women snap Seward streak emphatically, lock up No. 2 West seed

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team finally took down the Seward County Saints. It had been 6 years and 13 basketball games between the schools since the Cougars last knocked off Seward County in the 2000 Region VI Championship contest. That is no longer the case after a convincing 76-50 over Seward Saturday night at the Barton County Gym in the regular season finale. The 26-piont win ended the 12-game skid against Seward and gave the Cougars a 2nd place finish in the Jayhawk West and the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Region VI tournament. Barton, now 25-5 overall and 12-4 in the West, will take on Neosho County (9-21) Wednesday night at 7 pm in the Barton County Gym to open the post season. Admission is free by getting a ticket at 6 locations around Great Bend. Seward fell to 10-6 in the West and 24-6 overall. The Saints will host Independence in 1st round play.

Barton women roll by Dodge; one game from West 2nd seed in Region VI

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team took a big step toward that No. 2 seed from the West in the upcoming Region VI Tournament with an 83-61 win over Dodge City Wednesday night at the Barton County Gym. The Cougars made a school record 12 3-pointers in the contest. Barton is now 11-4 in the West and can secure the No. 2 seed with a win over Seward County Saturday in Great Bend. Barton is tied with Cloud County at 11-4, but the Cougars own the tiebreaker over Cloud by virtue of Barton’s win at West Champion Colby earlier this year. The Cougars are 24-5 overall while Dodge City falls to 19-10 and 7-8. Seward County will bring a 24-5 and 10-5 record into the Barton Gym on Hall of Fame night.

Cougars win at No. 11 Cloud; controls destiny for West 2nd seed in Region

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team is back on a winning streak and appears to have recaptured some of that momentum the Cougars had earlier this season. Barton ran it winning streak to 3 – all on the road – with an impressive win at No. 11 Cloud County. Barton defeated the Thunderbirds 57-46 thanks to an impressive defensive effort at Bryant Gymnasium Saturday night. The Cougars moved within a half-game of 2nd place but more importantly into a tie in the loss column for 2nd with Cloud. If the Cougars win out, Barton will be the No. 2 seed from the West in the upcoming Region VI playoffs. Barton improved to 10-4 in the West and 23-5 overall. Cloud is now 11-4 and 24-5 overall. The T-Birds have one game left – a road trip to Garden – while Barton has two home games left with Dodge and Seward.

Cougars win at Butler; set sights on 2nd place in West

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team put together back-to-back wins for the 1st time in nearly a month as the Cougars earned their 2nd straight road win, defeating Butler County 66-58 at the Power Plant in El Dorado. The Cougars trailed by 6 early in the 2nd half and still trailed by a pair with less than 10 minutes to play but held Butler to just 8 points in the final 10 minutes to secure the win. The win moves the Cougars within a game of 2nd place in the West with a 9-4 mark. Barton is now 22-5 overall. Butler falls to 9-18 and 3-10. Barton has a chance to move into a tie for 2nd Saturday when they travel to No. 11 Cloud County. Cloud is 11-3 in West play.

Barton women back to winning ways with road victory at Hutchinson

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team put another notch in the winning column Saturday night at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson with a 60-54 win over Hutch in Jayhawk West play. The win ended a brief 2-game skid by the Cougars, who had lost 4 of its last 5 contests. Barton is now 8-4 in the West and 21-5 overall while Hutch is 3-9 and 15-11. The Cougars trailed by as many as 8 points in the 2nd half before rallying for the win and taking a step closer to a home playoff game in the upcoming Region VI tournament. The Cougars could still finish as high as 2nd in the West or as low as 5th, depending on what the final 4 games brings. The final 4 contests with begin with a pair on the road, starting in El Dorado against Butler County Wednesday night.

Cougar women drop tough contest to No. 7 Colby, 48-46

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team led the No. 7 ranked team in the NJCAA for most of the night. But in the end it was Colby that made the plays late in the tight contest, handing the Cougars a tough setback, 48-46, Wednesday night at the Barton County Gym. Colby led for exactly 1:42 of the 40 minute contest against the Cougars, but the Trojans led when it counted, taking the lead with just 7 seconds to play to all but secure the Jayhawk West title. Barton sits in 3rd in the West with a 7-4 mark. The Cougars are 20-5 overall. Colby is now 11-1 in the West and must lose 2 of its final 4 games to miss out on the West title. The Trojans are 23-3 overall this season. Barton will now play 3 straight road games as the Cougars look to hold onto that 3rd spot in the West. That trek will begin in Hutchinson Saturday night when the Cougars take on the Blue Dragons at 6 pm.

Barton women’s struggles continue with loss at Garden; fall to 20-4

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team continued its recent struggles, losing for the 3rd time in 4 games Wednesday night in Garden City at the Perryman Activities Complex. The Cougars fell to the Broncbusters in overtime, 66-62. The loss was the toughest to date for Barton, which had lost its two previous West games to Cloud County and Seward County – teams at or near the top of the West. This one came at the expense of Garden City, who entered the game at just 3-6 in West play. The loss drops Barton to 20-4 for the season and 7-3 in the West while Garden is now 11-13 and 4-6. The Cougars will off Saturday before hosting West leader Colby Wednesday at the Barton County Gym. Barton could pull back to within a game of the West lead with a win over Colby.

Cougars back on winning track with win over Pratt; reach 20 wins on season

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team ended its 2-game skid with a convincing win over Pratt Saturday night at the Barton County Gym. The Cougars rolled to a 71-51 win over the Beavers on Homecoming night to start the 2nd time through the Jayhawk West. The Cougars got off to a quick start and never trailed in the contest. The Cougars improve to 20-3 on the season and 7-2 in West play. Pratt falls to 11-12 overall and 1-8. Barton will be on the road Wednesday to take on Garden City in West play before getting a week off.

Barton’s 17-game winning streak ended by Cloud County

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team had a chance to put a little more space between themselves and one of the other main contenders for the Jayhawk West title Saturday night at the Barton County Gym. But in the match-up of two ranked teams, Barton County saw its 17-game winning streak come to an end on its home floor as No. 19 Cloud County scored an 86-74 win over the No. 8 ranked Cougars. The loss puts Barton in a 3-way tie at the top of the conference with a 6-1 record in West play. Barton is 19-2 overall. Cloud County has those same 6-1 and 19-2 records while No. 15 Colby is also 6-1 in the West. Barton will try to remain a 1-loss West team Wednesday in a place they have not win at in 14 years when they travel to Liberal to take on Seward County. Seward is 4-3 in the West this season.

No. 8 Barton impressive in win at Dodge; runs winning streak to 17 games

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team appears to have shifted back into full gear. The Cougars backed up on if its best halves of basketball Saturday night with one of its best full games Wednesday night. Barton rolled to an impressive 80-57 road win over Dodge City at the Civic Center in Dodge in Jayhawk West action. Barton jumped out to an early lead and kept the barrage on the Conquistadors all night long. The win was the 17th straight for the No. 8 ranked Cougars, who are now 19-1 overall and still perfect in the West at 6-0. Dodge fell to 15-5 overall and 3-3 in the West. Barton will have a battle for the top spot in the West Saturday when No. 15 Cloud County visits the Barton County Gym.

Cougars drop 2nd straight as Seward County rolls to win in Liberal

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team has come across the same struggles as last season – lose a game and follow it with another loss. It happened for the 1st time this season when Barton lost at Seward County – a place the Saints have now won 152 of 153 games – Wednesday night by an 86-66 score. The losses come on the heels of a 17-game winning streak for Barton. This mark the 6th time – 12 losses out of a total of 15 losses – Barton has dropped back-to-back games the past two seasons. Five times last year Barton followed a loss with another, totaling 10 of the 12 losses. The 12th loss didn’t have another game that followed as Barton lost in the Region VI title game to Seward. Barton has never dropped 3 straight in Coach Lane Lord’s tenure. The Cougars will put that to the test Saturday when Pratt visits for Homecoming. With the loss at Liberal, Barton is now 19-3 overall and 6-2 in the West. Seward is also 19-3 overall and 5-3 in the West.

Cougars use 20-0 run to earn win over Hutch; run win streak to 16

When the Barton County Community College women’s basketball team was lackluster for much of the opening half of basketball. But late in the 1st half, Barton found its game and used a 20-0 run in the 2nd half to put away a pesky, beaten up Hutchinson Blue Dragon team for a 68-39 win at the Barton County Gym Saturday night in Jayhawk West play. The Cougars trailed by as many as 13 points in the opening half before rallying for the win – their 16th straight win. Barton, ranked 8th in the NJCAA, is now 18-1 overall this season and remains unbeaten in West action at 5-0. Hutchinson is now 13-6 overall and 1-4 in the West. Barton will travel to Dodge City Wednesday for another Jayhawk West contest.

Cougars remain alone top West standings with easy win over Butler

When the Barton County Community College women’s basketball team found itself alone on top of the Jayhawk West conference this past weekend it was the 1st time in 8 years that someone other than Seward County could claim that distinction. Wednesday night at the Barton County Gym, the No. 8 Cougars reaffirmed their grasp alone atop the West with a 58-46 win over Butler County. Barton, now riding the wave of a 15-game winning streak, moves to 17-1 overall this year and a perfect 4-0 in the West. Butler fell to 6-12 overall and remains at the bottom of the West with an 0-4 record. The Cougars will go after consecutive win number 16 Saturday when Hutchinson visits the Barton County Gym.

Barton stays atop West with big road win at Colby; runs winning streak to 14

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team had a big task on its hands Wednesday night, traveling to Jayhawk West favorite Colby for a battle of Top 25 teams. In addition, Barton was without the services of point guard Maya Onikute, who is lost for at least 4 weeks after suffering a concussion in the last game. Barton responded by picking up its game another notch as the No. 10 ranked Cougars held off the Trojans for a 64-61 win. The Cougars also played without guard Brandi Harris, who was serving a suspension and will return to action in Barton’s next outing. Barton is off for a week before a pair of home games next week with Butler and Hutchinson.

Barton survives scare with overtime win over Garden

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team got a big-time scare from Garden City Saturday night at before surviving with a 77-67 overtime win in Jayhawk West action at the Barton County Gym. Barton trailed much of the game in the 2nd half but dominated the overtime period in a contest that saw 10 ties and 11 lead changes. The 10-point margin of victory was the largest lead either team had in the contest. With the win Barton runs its’ winning streak to 13 games – the longest in 7 years at the school. Barton is now 2-0 in the West and 15-1 overall. Garden City falls to 0-2 in the West and 7-9 overall. The Cougars will travel to West co-leader Colby Wednesday night in a battle to remain at the top of the West.

Cougars move to 14-1 overall with win in West opener at Pratt

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team used a big run to start the 2nd half Wednesday on its way to a 71-61 win over Pratt Community College at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena in Pratt. The game was the 1st of the Jayhawk West season. The win moved Barton to 14-1 overall on the season with the perfect 1-0 mark to start West play. Pratt fell to 10-5 overall this year and 0-1 in the West. The Cougars will open the home portion of their West slate Saturday when Garden City visits the Barton County Gym at 6 p.m.

Barton wins Dixie Tournament; rallies from 16 down in finals for OT win

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team played two of its best games of the year, and then rallied from a 16-point deficit in the championship game of the Dixie State College Holiday Tournament to capture the title. The Cougars won the event held in Las Vegas, Nev. to improve to 13-1 this season with wins over 3 Utah schools. Barton defeated the College of Eastern Utah in the opener, 73-52, and then rolled by host Dixie State in the semis by a 79-64 count. In the finals, Barton rallied for a 69-68 overtime win over Salt Lake Community College. Barton will now set it sights on Jayhawk West play starting this week. The Cougars will travel to Pratt Wednesday to tip off conference action.

Cougars impressive at Pizza Hut Classic in Liberal

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team put perhaps its best back-to-back outings of the season together this weekend, winning a pair of games impressively at the Pizza Hut Classic in Liberal on the campus of Seward County. The Cougars rode a strong defensive effort to win the opener, 73-39 over Casper College (Wyom) then turned around and won by an 89-69 score Saturday on the strength of their shooting. Barton’s wins runs the Cougars to mark to 10-1 this season. The Cougars will be off until Dec. 27 when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. to play in the Dixie State College (Utah) Holiday Tournament. The Cougars will open play against Eastern Utah.

Barton women roll to easy wins at Jayhawk Shoot Out

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team had an easy time this weekend at the annual Jayhawk Shoot Out, rolling to a pair of blowout wins over a pair of foes from the Jayhawk East. The Cougars defeated Allen County 77-42 Friday morning then knocked off Fort Scott Saturday evening by an 80-56 count. The wins move Barton to 8-1 for the season with a pair of games this weekend at the Pizza Hut Invitational in Liberal against Casper College (Wyom) and Northeastern (Colo) Junior College.

Barton rebounds from loss with big wins at Ambassador Classic in Colby

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team responded from its first loss of the season in a big way, rolling to wins of 61 and 41 this weekend at the Ambassador Classic in Colby. In both contests the Cougars more than doubled their foes output. Barton defeated Brown Mackie by a 104-43 score Friday then knocked off Jayhawk East Independence by a 76-35 score Saturday to finish the Classic with a 2-0 mark. Barton is now 4-1 overall this season. Barton will be back at home for the 1st time since the season-opening tournament when they host the Booster Club Classic Friday and Saturday.

Cougars drop road contest at Cowley County, 2-1 for the season

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team has not started the season off with an easy slate of contest. Just 3 games into the season, Barton has played the No. 16 ranked team and the top two teams in the Jayhawk East. Barton survived the 1st two of those tests but was unable to come away with a win in its 1st road contest of the season. Barton fell to defending Jayhawk East Champion Cowley County Tuesday night in Arkansas City, 63-60. The loss drops the Cougars to 2-1 for the season with 2 games this weekend at the Colby Classic.

Barton knocks off No. 15 Eastern Oklahoma, goes 2-0 at Booster Classic

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team remained unbeaten at home this season by knocking off their 2nd ranked foe at the Barton County Gym Saturday night. Barton defeated No. 15 Eastern Oklahoma by a 72-64 count to move to 6-1 on the season and a perfect 4-0 at home. Friday night Barton defeated Lincoln Land (Ill) College, 88-69, to go a perfect 2-0 at the Barton County Booster Club Classic over the weekend. The Cougars will look to move to 8-1 next weekend when they travel to Coffeyville for the annual Jayhawk ShootOut. Barton will take on Allen County and Fort Scott.

Barton opens season with a pair of wins in Pizza Hut Classic

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team started the season in impressive fashion, winning a pair of games at the Pizza Hut Classic this past weekend at the Barton County Gym. Barton, ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA preseason poll, opened the season with a 59-53 win over No. 16 ranked Iowa Western. The Cougars then polished off the event with an 86-82 overtime win over one of the favorites in the Jayhawk East, Coffeyville. The wins move the Cougars to 2-0 and they will now have 10 days off before resuming action with a trip to Arkansas City to play the defending East champ Cowley County.

Barton ranked No. 8 in NJCAA preseason poll; picked 2nd in West

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team entered last season with limited expectations. Not only were the Cougars no where to be found in the NJCAA preseason poll, they were picked to finish in the bottom half of the Jayhawk West. This season things will be very, very different to start the year for Barton. This time around the Cougars are not only picked to challenge for the Jayhawk West title – selected to finish 2nd by the coaches in the conference – but Barton will start the 2005-06 campaign as the preseason No. 8 ranked team in the country

Barton women hoops ink 6 players for 2005-06 season

The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team has signed 6 players for the upcoming season to go along with 9 returning sophomore giving the Cougars a deep squad for Coach Lane Lord’s 2nd season at the helm of the program. Barton inked 3 in-state and 3 out-of-state players.
