The Barton Community College men's basketball team defeated Cowley College 76-69 Sunday night at Park City's Hartman Arena in the quarterfinals of the Region VI Tournament. Barton ends seventh seeded Cowley's season at 17-15 while the second seeded Cougars improve to 25-7 on the season advancing to the semifinal round for the first time since 2013. The Cougars will next play in the 5:00 p.m. game on Tuesday in the rubber match with sixth seeded Coffeyville Community College who improved to 20-12 on the season after the Ravens dispatched Neosho County Community College 84-60.

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team built a double-digit lead in the first fifteen minutes of Monday’s regular season finale at the Barton Gym, going on for a ten point 82-72 victory over Neosho County Community College. Starting off fast out of the second half gates, the Cougars controlled the first half of the final period as well, ballooning the lead out to as much as twenty-points before thwarting a late Neosho County rally. The victory clinched Barton’s outright second place standing in the Jayhawk Conference at 19-7, improving to 23-7 on the season while dropping Neosho County to 8-18 in conference and 11-19 overall.

The loss drops the second place Cougars to 18-7 in Jayhawk play and 27-7 overall while Coffeyville keeps its hopes for the region’s fourth seed alive improving to 14-11 and 18-11 on the year. Owning a one game lead for the second spot in the upcoming playoffs, the Cougars will seek to wrap up the seed in the regular season finale on Monday with a 7:30 p.m. tip hosting Neosho County Community College.

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team broke away early in second half play Wednesday night at the Barton Gym earning a 91-81 victory over Pratt Community College to sweep the season series over the Beavers. Leading by one at the break, the Cougars gained separation in the first five minutes of the second half while keeping Pratt out of striking range the rest of the way to win their third straight over the Beavers. The victory also clinched at least a tie for a second place finish in the rugged Jayhawk Conference improving to 18-6 and 22-6 on the year while dropping Pratt to 7-17 and 9-18 overall. Barton will next travel to Coffeyville Community College on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off before wrapping up the regular season on Monday in the hosting of Neosho County Community College.

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team held off a second half Thunderbird rally on Hall of Fame nigh Saturday at the Barton Gym with a 74-71 victory over Cloud County Community College to sweep the season series. Leading by six at halftime, Barton doubled its lead in the next twelve minutes before an 18-8 Cloud County run made things interesting for the final 1:35. The Cougars then sank 7-of-8 from the free throw line holding off the Thunderbirds including a trey with one second remaining and a Barton turnover with the tying trey attempt unable to beat the buzzer. With three games remaining in the regular season, Barton strengthened is spot for the region’s second seed improving to 17-6 in Jayhawk play and 21-6 overall while Cloud County slips back to a fourth place tie with Coffeyville at 13-10 and 17-10 on the year. Within the remaining games, the Cougars have two at the Barton Gym beginning with Wednesday’s hosting of Pratt Community College for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Unlike the previous shootout meeting at the Barton Gym, Wednesday night in Arkansas City was anything of an offensive highlight show but featured its share of dramatics as the Barton Community College men’s basketball team rallied from a nine-point late deficit to win 86-81 in overtime over the Tigers of Cowley College. Searching for offensive production and in a nine point hole with just under seven minutes to play, the Cougars contributed throughout the lineup needing a pair of free throws with four seconds left to force extra time. Barton then scored the opening four points of overtime and eight of the first ten to seize command before holding on for its second overtime win of the year. The Cougars’ victory, aided by Dodge City’s loss, leaves Barton alone in second place of the Jayhawk at 13-5 and 17-5 on the season while dropping the Tigers to 9-9 in conference action and 12-10 overall. Next up for Barton is Saturday’s 5:30 p.m. contest hosting Allen County Community College, a Red Devil team riding hot into the Barton Gym after Wednesday night’s 85-76 victory Butler Community College.

Getting timely long distance shots Monday afternoon in Chanute, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team won their fourth straight contest with a 76-64 victory at Neosho County Community College. As John Barbee’s long range bomb at the buzzer gave Barton a six-point halftime edge, 50% second half shooting by the Cougars including three treys from Malik Rhodes in the final five minutes proved clutch in securing the victory. Barton improves to 10-3 in conference play and 14-3 on the season in sending the Panthers to their fourth straight loss dropping to 3-10 and 6-11 on the year. Next up for the Cougars will be a Wednesday evening 7:30 p.m. tip-off at the Barton Gym against the Trojans of Colby Community College.

The Cougars erased a two-point halftime deficit with the twenty minute surge getting two individual double-double performances and placing six players in double figures to reach the century mark for the third time of the season. Barton remains in second place with the victory improving to 8-3 in the Jayhawk and 12-3 while sending Pratt to its third straight defeat having surrendered over a hundred points in dropping to the conference cellar at 2-9 and 4-10 on the year. Placing five players in double digit figures, the Cougars knocked down all seven of its second half shots in scoring fifty-seven points to snap a three game slide in the season. The victory moves both the Cougars and Thunderbirds into a four team log jam for second place in the conference race at 7-3, as well as, an identical 11-3 mark on the season. Playing without its leading scorer Ezekiel Charles, the Cougars battled throughout the night but a critical 6-0 run before the half set the tone as the Blue Dragons continued its hot shooting in the second half holding off Barton’s bid for the upset. The third straight loss sends the Cougars into the holiday break at 6-3 in Jayhawk play and 10-3 on the season while Hutchinson improves to 9-0 in conference and 13-0 on the year. Barton’s next action will come Wednesday, January 4, as the Cougars travel to second place Cloud County Community College for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off to resume the conference season.

The Cougars battled back from an eight point halftime hole to get back in the game but still found itself trailing by three late before outscoring the Red Devils 10-2 in the final two minutes including the difference making 5-0 spurt in the final minute to earn the victory. Barton continues to share the conference top spot at 6-0 with the 10-0 start to the season while dropping Allen County to 2-4 in Jayhawk play and 5-5 on the year. The Cougars’ will host Independence Community College in its next contest with a 5:30 p.m. tip Saturday at the Barton Gym.

Improving to 9-0, the Cougars share the top spot in the Jayhawk standings at 5-0 while dropping Cowley to 2-3 and 5-4 on the year. It’s been four years since the Barton Community College men’s basketball team could enjoy the drive home after the three hour trip to Liberal but Tuesday night the Cougars broke that three-game streak defeating Seward County Community College 88-81. The Cougars answered the Saints first lead in nearly twenty-four minutes with an 8-0 mid second half run building an eleven point margin in the following five minutes before holding Seward County at arm’s reach the rest of the game. Additionally snapping a three game losing streak to the Saints, Barton remains atop the conference standings at 4-0 improving to 8-0 on the season while sending Seward County to its eight straight conference season dating back to last season’s win over the Cougars in falling to 0-4 in the Jayhawk and 3-5 on the season. Barton will take a few days off for the holiday break before refocusing for Saturday’s 5:30 p.m. contest against Cowley College.

The second road victory of the young conference season improves the Cougars to 3-0 in the Jayhawk and 7-0 on the season while Butler drops to 1-2 and 4-2 on the year. The Barton Community College men’s basketball team ran away with a 125-70 victory over Sterling College’s junior varsity squad Wednesday night at the Barton Gym completing the non-conference portion of its season schedule. Placing seven players in double figures with two posting double-double performances, the Cougars’ twenty-seven point halftime mark ballooned to fifty-nine late in the game behind nearly 61% shooting on the night. Barton will next begin the conference schedule grind on Saturday as the 4-0 Cougars travel to the 3-0 Trojans of Colby Community College in an 8:00 p.m. tip at the Community Building.

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team led by all but one minute Friday night in the Best Western and Cougar Booster Classic cruising to a 69-54 win over Region VI foe Highland Community College. Behind a 10-0 start to the second half, the Cougars lead nearly doubled in leading by over twenty points much of the second half in moving to 2-0 in spoiling the Scotties season opener. Next up with be Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. tip-off against another Region VI opponent, Hesston College, to wrap up the weekend’s Classic. The Larks dropped to 1-1 on the season falling in the afternoon game to the junior varsity squad from Washburn University.

Charles drops thirty leading Barton men's basketball to season opening victory

Behind the thirty point effort of sophomore Ezekiel Charles, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team opened up the season Wednesday night at the Barton Gym with an 86-48 victory over the junior varsity squad from McPherson College. The Cougars broke open the contest with a 16-0 run midway through the first half leading to a twenty-seven point halftime lead in cruising to the win. Barton will next begin preparation for this weekend’s Best Western Cougar Booster Club Classic at the Barton Gym taking on Region VI members Highland Community College on Friday and Hesston College on Saturday. Tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. for both contests.
