Goncalves' third place leads Barton women's cross country team at Papa John's Invite #GoBarton

The Barton Community College women's cross country team competed in their second meet of the season Friday evening in the Papa John's Invitational hosted by Emporia State University. Held at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course, the Lady Cougars didn't field a full team in the 5k race amongst a field of 147 runners from NJCAA, NAIA, and NCAA Division II levels.

Mirena Goncalves came up short of her second consecutive win as the sophomore from Venezuela finished in third place at 19:35.40 to Garden City Community College's Sandra Szpott's 18:27.90 winning time and Sierra Mortensen of Washburn University's runner-up time of 19:07.40

Leading the three freshman in the race was Floridan Cadeebra Calcote coming in 33rd in 21:40.70 while Olivian Jackson placed 129th in 27:54.6 and Tia Steward's time 32:47.6 placed 144th.

Barton will next travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for the Cowboy Jamboree beginning at 9:15 a.m. this Saturday, September 30.
