FABULOUS FIND ON 99
Emporia State plays host to the Papa John's Invitational presented by Uncommon Threads on Friday. Over 350 athletes representing 25 teams are expected to compete at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course located south of Emporia on K-99. Although the majority of teams will be jucos and NAIA schools, this will be a cross country Turnpike Tussle in Emporia with Washburn scheduled to compete.
LAST LAP
Brian Newkirk had a top 25 finish to lead the Emporia State men to a 13th place team finish out of 25 teams at the Southern Stampede. Kelsey Graber was the top finisher for the Hornet women who placed 27th in the team standings.
Newkirk ran 25:28.20 over the eight kilometer course to place 23rd for the Hornets. Aaron Taylor was the second runner for the Hornet men, turning in a 26:05.24 to place 53rd overall. Graber turned in a 20:05.46 over five kilometers to place 167th for the Emporia State women. Christina Wankum was the second Hornet across the line in 20:21.82 to place 179th overall.
THE COACH
Steven Blocker is in his seventh year as the head coach for the Emporia State track and field/cross country programs. He served as an assistant with the Hornets beginning in 2009 working primarily with the sprinters, jumpers and multi-event athletes. He has produced 52 All-Americans and 20 MIAA Champions in his first six years as head coach after coaching 14 All-Americans, six MIAA Champions and an NCAA Division II National Champion as an assistant for the Hornets.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
Brian Newkirk has led the Hornet men in the first two meets of the year. Aaron Taylor and Gabe Sams alternated in the second and third spots for the Hornets while Thomas LaRoche and Cole Bosley have split the fourth and fifth spots.
A pair of first time cross country competitors have led the Emporia State women in the first two meets. Nora Wheatley was the top finisher for the Hornets at the JK Gold while Kelsey Graber had the top time at the Southern Stampede. Christina Wankum was the second runner for the Hornets in both meets.
RANKINGS
The MIAA has two teams receiving votes in the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25 this week. The Missouri Southern men are ranked #23 while the Northwest Missouri men are listed in the others receiving votes. Five of the ten regionally ranked men's teams are from the MIAA with four women's teams in the regional top ten.
LAST TIME AT PAPA JOHN'S
Brian Newkirk placed sixth individually to lead the Emporia State men to a third place finish at the Papa Johns Cross Country Invitational. Emily Schoenfeld finished fourth in the women's race as the Hornet women finished in fifth in the team standings. Newkirk ran 25:51.86 over the eight kilometer course and was the second Division II finisher in the race. Thomas LaRoche and Aaron Taylor placed 20th and 21st while Cole Bosley was 29th for the Hornets. Schoenfeld was fourth overall in 18:42.51 over the five kilometers. Christina Wankum was 24th, Mercy Perez placed 35th, Devyn Smith was 43rd and Nicole Blick placed 86th to round out the Hornets scoring.

The Hornets will travel to Lawrence, Kan. to take part in the Haskell Invite on Saturday, October 7.
