Barton rolls to easy wins to open basketball season
The Barton County Community College men's basketball team had very little trouble in its opening weekend, rolling to a pair of wins at the Military Appreciation Classic at the Barton Gym in Great Bend. The Cougars defeated the Central Christian JV Friday night 122-42 then followed Saturday with a 101-56 win over Barclay College. Barton will be at home next weekend as well, facing the Kansas Wesleyan JV Friday and Brown Mackie Saturday at 8 pm in the Barton Classic.

Highlights
Barton took a big lead early Friday night and coasted to a 60-17 halftime lead on the Central Christian JV. The Cougars shot 67 percent in the opening half, including 5-of-10 on 3-pointers. Barton upped that overall percent to 68 percent in the 2nd half coasting the win. Six players reached double figures for the Cougars and all 11 players scored in the contest.

Qa'rraan Calhoun scored 21 in his Cougar debut to lead Barton. Returnee Chris Jackson added 17 on 7-of-8 shooting while sophomore transfer Javon Parris had 16 and sophomore returnee Scott Schneider added 15. Freshmen Chip Steven (14) and Nyika Williams (13) were also in double digits. Great Bend freshman Matt Simmons led Barton with 9 rebounds and 8 assists.

Barton again jumped to a double digit lead in the opening 5 minutes Saturday and rolled to the easy win over Barclay. Barton led 52-28 at halftime and by as many as 56.

Calhoun again paced the Cougars with 23 points and Steven added 20. Steven hit 5-of-11 3-pointers in the game. Parris ended the night with 16 points and 7 assists from his point guard spot. Simmons had another big game for Barton with 12 points and a 15 rebounds in the win. Schneider was also in double figures again with 11 points.
