  • Schlick selected in 39th round by White Sox
    June 10, 2010
    Levi Schlick became the latest in a line of Barton Community College baseball players selected in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft. Schlick, a freshman for the Cougars last season, was picked on day three of the 3-day draft, going in the 39th round to the Chicago White Sox. Schlick will continue pitching for the Hays Lark this summer before a decision will be made on his future.
  • Barton finishes season with 1-2 mark at Sub Regional; 32-24 on season

    The Barton Community College baseball team saw its 2010 campaign end late Sunday afternoon El Dorado as the Cougars lost to Coffeyville for the 2nd time at the Sub Regional hosted by Butler. Barton lost Saturday to Coffeyville as well then beat Independence in the 4-team double elimination Sub Regional before falling to Coffeyville Sunday to ends its season. Barton finished its season with a 32-24 record. The Cougars lost a close contest to start the regional, falling to Coffeyville 4-3 to send Barton to the loser’s bracket. There Barton beat Independence 6-3 to earn a contest Sunday where Barton didn’t fare too well, losing 14-3 to Coffeyville. Butler won the event, beating Coffeyville in a 2nd championships game Tuesday. The Grizzlies with join the other 3 Sub Regional chamions in Wichita this weekend.

    The Barton Community College baseball team lost 3 of 4 games over the weekend in its Jayhawk West finale at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend. The Cougars won the opener Saturday with Garden City then lost the next three to finish tied for 5th in the Jayhawk West but taking the 6th seed from the West to the post season. After a 5-4 win in 12 innings to start Saturday the Cougars lost 3-2 in 8 innings in the nightcap as the opening day produced a pair of extra inning contests. Sunday also had two close games as Barton lost 4-2 in the opener and 9-8 in the series finale. Barton finishes West play at 16-16 and is 31-22 overall. Garden City finished 3rd in the conference with a 21-11 West record and is 37-15 overall. The Broncbusters are ranked No. 19 in the NJCAA. Barton will head to El Dorado for a 4-team double elimination tournament in Region VI play with the winner of that going on to Wichita for the Region VI Championships the following weekend. Barton will take on Coffeyville Saturday at McDonald Park in El Dorado at 3 pm
  • Cougars take 3 of 4 in Dodge; host Garden this weekend

    The Barton Community College baseball team took 3 of 4 in its Jayhawk West series at Dodge City this past weekend. The Cougars swept the Conquistadors Saturday 10-1 and 6-2. Dodge rolled to a 13-3 win to start Sunday then Barton closed out the series with a 12-9 win. Barton is now tied for 5th in the West at 15-13 and still could finish as high as 3rd. The Cougars are 29-19 overall. Dodge locked up the No. 7 in the West with its 14-18 record and West season complete for Dodge. The other 8 teams will wrap up West play this weekend with Barton hosting Garden City at 1 pm both Saturday and Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field.
  • Barton wraps up non conference stretch with 4-2 mark

    The Barton Community College baseball team filled up a stretch of 13 days between conference series with 6 non conference games scattered over 5 dates all at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend. The Cougars finished that stretch with a 4-2 mark, earning wins over Brown Mackie, the Bethany and Kansas Wesleyan JV’s as well as going 1-2 in a weekend series with Southeast Community College from Nebraska. The Cougars are now 26-18 on the season and will step back into West play this weekend at Dodge City for 4 games starting Saturday.
  • Barton rallies for series split with Butler; Schlick tosses 3-hitter

    The Barton Community College baseball team bounced back from a forgetful Saturday to have a memorable Sunday in its Jayhawk West series this past weekend at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend. The Cougars dropped a pair of games Saturday to co-West leader Butler – one in very tough fashion – then swept the Grizzlies Sunday – both down the wire. Barton won Sunday 1-0 behind a 3-hit gem from freshman Levi Schlick. The Cougars won the 2nd game in dramatic come-from-behind fashion in extra innings, 10-9 in 10 innings. Butler won Saturday games 7-3 in 9 innings and 17-5. The Cougars are now 12-12 in the West and 22-16 overall. Butler is 14-6 in the West and 22-13 overall. Barton is out of conference play for a while hosting the Bethany JV Monday and Southeast Nebraska this weekend.

    The Barton Community College baseball team will take a 4-1 record over its last 5 games into a big Jayhawk West series this weekend. The Cougars won 3 of 4 games at Cloud County over the extended Easter Weekend then beat Brown Mackie Tuesday at Lawson-Biggs Field on the campus of Barton. Barton will host West leader Butler this weekend in a pivotal series at Lawson-Biggs. Doubleheader action Saturday and Sunday will start at 1 pm against the Grizzlies. Barton is currently 10-10 in the West and 20-14 overall. Butler is in a 3-way tie at the top with a 12-4 record in the West. The Grizzlies are 20-11 overall.
  • Barton sweeps Pratt in West series to run winning streak to 6

    The Barton Community College baseball team made it 6 straight wins with a 4-game sweep of Pratt over the weekend at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend. Barton won the Jayhawk West series with a pair of wins on Saturday and Sunday to improve to 6-2 in the West and 11-4 overall this season. The Cougars won Saturday by 6-5 and 11-2 scores then followed up Sunday with a 15-3 win the opener and a 15-10 win in the finale. Barton has won 11 of its last 13 games. The Cougars will stay at home to face Independence Wednesday in a double header starting at 2 pm at Lawson-Biggs Field.
  • Cougars split West opening series with Hutch

    The Barton Community College baseball team rallied for a sweep of Hutchinson Tuesday afternoon in Hutchinson after dropping in the opening two games of the Jayhawk West series. Barton lost two in Hays Sunday then won the pair in Hutch to split the series at 2 games apiece. The series was the opening of the Jayhawk West season. Barton is now 7-4 overall while Hutch is 6-3. Barton is at home against Pratt this weekend. Both games at Lawson-Biggs Field start at 1 pm.
  • Edlefsen rockets to AAA; Lee nearly unhittable in 4 starts this year

    Steve Edlefsen skipped a level last week as he was promoted in the San Francisco Giants organization all the way from Class A Advanced to AAA, skipping over AA. The former Cougar had started the year at AA before going back to Advanced A, where he was nearly untouchable before his promotion. He joins former Cougars Nate Field and Jeff Christy just one step away from Major League Baseball. Field already has major league experience but for Christy and Edlefsen AAA is the highest level they have played in pro baseball. Former Cougar Chad Lee is also making some noise in his return from injury. Ronald Morales had spent much of the summer playing for the Wichita Wingnuts but recently asked for and was given his release from the team.
  • Field named to Team USA for World Cup Baseball

    Former Barton Community College baseball player Nate Field was selected to play for Team USA at the upcoming World Cup Baseball tournament. He was one of 24 players named to the team recently. The event will take place at during three different rounds running from September 9-27. Field had been pitching with the Florida Marlins AAA team in New Orleans. The Marlins gave him permission to participate for USA Baseball.
