Barton opens baseball season with pair of wins
The Barton County Community College baseball team started off the 2003 season in good shape, sweeping a pair of from Western Nebraska Community College at Cougar Field Tuesday. Barton defeated Western Nebraska 11-1 in the opener and 9-7 in the nightcap.

Highlights
The Cougars received a strong pitching performance from sophomore Andrew Burdine in the opening contest. Burdine controlled the strike zone all the day, throwing just 64 pitches in the 5-inning run-rule complete game win. Burdine struck out 8 and walked none while allowing just 3 hits and 1 earned run.

Glenn Jackson got the Cougars on the board in the first inning, reaching on a fielder's choice, stealing second, moving to third on an error and scoring on a Roberts RBI single. A 4-run 2nd inning, keyed by several Western Nebraska errors gave the Cougars a 5-0 cushion. Jackson scored three times in the contest and stole three bases as well. Jeff Christy homered in the contest and Michael Roberts had an RBI double.

In the second contest, Barton County had to outscore Western Nebraska for the win. Western Nebraska took a commanding 7-1 lead in the top of third before the Cougars started to chip away at the lead. RBI singles by T.J. Liles and Travis Oosthoek in the 3rd cut the margin to 7-3. Wes Renfro and Roberts each drove in runs in the 4th inning as the Cougars trimmed the margin to 7-5.

A big 5th inning would end up giving the Cougars the win. The Cougars overtook Western Nebraska when Jackson tripled in Anthony Flores and scored on an error on the play for a 9-7 lead that would end up being the final margin. Jackson scored four more times in the game and swiped two more bases.

A trio of pitchers saw action for the Cougars with Acea Warn getting the win in relief and Ryan Phillips tossing a pair of scoreless innings to preserve the save.

The Cougars next scheduled contest will be March 1 at Overland Park for a doubleheader with Johnson County slated for 1:30 p.m.
