Personal best efforts highlight Lady Cougars at FHSU Tiger Open

Although the Barton Community College women's cross country team didn't field a team Saturday in the Fort Hays State University Tiger Open at Victoria's Sand Plum Nature Trail, the Lady Cougars received 5k personal best efforts from two of the three entrants.

Competing in the higher level "Gold" race, Mirena Goncalves didn't have the most comfortable race in finishing 33rd out of 134 runners.  Having set a new personal record last week at the Chile Pepper Festival earning her the KJCCC Runner of the Week award, Goncalves still finished the course in a career second best time of 18:08.4.

Two personal bests led the Lady Cougars in the "Black" race including a ninth place overall in a field of 165 by Wilyeska Suarez eclipsing her best by twenty-two seconds finishing at 18:59.3.  Mariah Stein, who set her personal 5k fastest time at the 2015 Chile Pepper Festival, beat her time by twenty seconds to place 71st in 20:37.3.

The Lady Cougars will take the week off from competition preparing for Barton's next competition coming Saturday, October 29, in the Region VI Championships in Hutchinson, Kansas.
