Goncalves named KJCCC Runner of the Week

Mirena Goncalves of the Barton Community College women's cross country team was named KJCCC Female Runner of the Week as voted by conference coaches for Week 2.  The freshman from Caracas, Venezuela, earned the honor after winning the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic this past Friday in Hutchinson as the Cougars opened up their 2016 season.

Defeating the field of 101 runners from NJCAA, NAIA, and NCAA Division II levels, Goncalves won the three mile race in 18:11.6 and more than seven seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

The Lady Cougars didn't field a full team in the race but along with Goncalves' title, fellow Venezuelan freshman Wilyeska Suarez grabbed the fifth spot in 19:08.2.

Barton will have a weekend away from competition before heading to Joplin, Missouri, for the Missouri Southern Stampede held on Saturday, September 17.
