Goncalves captures title, Barton women's cross country team opens season

The Barton Community College women's cross country team opened up their 2016 season Friday evening under the lights of Hutchinson's Fun Valley Sports Complex in the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic.  Competing in a field of 101 runners from NJCAA, NAIA, and NCAA Division II levels, the Lady Cougars didn't field a full team in the three mile race but did place two freshmen in the top five as Mirena Goncalves took the title with Wilyeska Suarez grabbing the fifth spot.

Goncalves conquered the three laps outside the Complex's six ball diamond fields in 18:11.6 for a seven second cushion with fellow Venezuelan Suarez crossing in 19:08.2 for fifth place.

Mariah Stein, the lone Cougar sophomore competing in the event, placed 68th in 22:01 while Amira Del Muro's 22:15.7 was three slots behind in 71st place.

The Lady Cougars will return to competition Saturday, September 17, traveling to Joplin, Missouri, for the Missouri Southern Stampede.
