Third ranked Lady Cougars add three more to national indoor qualifying list
The No. 3 ranked Barton Community College women's track and field team added three more national qualifying entries with another strong showing this past weekend participating in the Black & Gold Premier hosted by the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.
Now with twenty qualifying standards met for the indoor championships, Barton had twelve personal bests at the meet in placing fifteen among the top nine.
The 60m length track produced three personal bests but it was the 8.63 time in the hurdles by Mahendra McWhite to bring home a runner-up finish and move up the qualifying list to the second spot nationally. Fellow sophomore Asjah Wallace's personal best 8.69 was a blink behind in fourth place, holding steady at the third slot in the national rankings. Deborah Giffard led two personal bests in the non-hurdle 60m variety placing ninth in 7.73 to move up to 13th nationally while Rashan Darling's 7.85 met national standards in finishing 12th.
Setting a new personal best earning last week's conference track athlete honor, Latoya Stewart didn't set a new PR this weekend but did punch her ticket in the 200m as well with a 25.11 clocking to place fourth. Nijah Roberson's ninth place personal best 25.51 time also met qualifying standards to join Stewart and Wallace on the national list.
Although no new qualifiers in the field events, the Lady Cougars did strike for five personal best marks. Already on the national long jump list, Amanda Carty finished second with a 5.80m (19-00.50) leap while Fiona Barnes placed third with a jump of 5.62m (18.05.25).
Two personal bests fell by the wayside in the shot put in Kameliah Style's sixth place 11.44m (37-06.50) heave while Mikayla Dietz was a spot behind in seventh at 10.76m (35-03.75). Dietz also sent a new personal best in the weight throw placing fifth overall at 11.75m (38-06.75).
Next on the slate is its second trip of the season to Lincoln, Nebraska, as the Lady Cougars compete in the weekend's Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.
