Relay team enters Barton record book, multiple Lady Cougars amongst nation's fastest

The Barton Community College track and field team continues to turn heads following their third meet of the indoor season, competing this weekend in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the Cherry and Silver Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico.

The 4x400m relay team of Chenelle Ricketts, Sabrina Mason, Rian Robinson, and Latoya Stewart stole the show for the Cougars for a photo finish runner-up standing, zipping around the oval inside the Albuquerque Convention Center to a school seventh best and nation's current top time of 3:42.28.  

Freshman Keosha Sanders also made a splash on the national watch list winning her 60m preliminary round section on Friday in an altitude adjusted 7.62 for the third fastest time in the NJCAA so far in the season and just ahead of Mason's 7.63 fourth best time set in the opening week at the Easton Classic.  Sanders missed the finals clocking a slightly slower 7.65 in Saturday's semifinals.  

Mason also put up the nation's third best time clocking an adjusted 24.37 time in the 200m for the sophomore's personal best time.  Mahendra McWhite joined Mason with a top ten time clocking a 25.26 while Sanders recorded a 25.67 to rank 22nd.

Stewart led a three Lady Cougar splash into the nation's 400m top five standings clocking the nation's fastest time of 55.57.  Robinson put up the third best at 56.49 followed by Ricketts' fourth best 56.70 and Tia Steward's thirteenth best 58.68.

McWhite tied teammate Ayesha Champagnie's second best time in the nation in the 60m hurdles finishing fifth in the event with Champagnie finishing seventh in 8.81.

In the jumps freshman Ed'Quisha Alvin soared to a 1.65m (5-05.00) height to capture sixth place at the event and currently nationally in the high jump while Champagnie finished ninth in the long jump at 5.59m (18-04.25) to rank in the fifth place in the current national standings.  Champagnie also cracked the top ten standings with a nation's sixth best 13.93m (45-08.50) shot put heave. 

Barton's next action comes Friday as the Cougar squads travel to Lawrence, Kansas, for the second time in the young season, competing in the one day Jayhawk Classic hosted by the University of Kansas.
