Champagnie breaks Barton women track and field school record

Competing in the first day of the two-day meet, Champagnie concluded the day rewriting the Barton record book scoring 3787 points in the Pentathlon surpassing the 3784 recorded by Lisa Wright during the 1996 season. Champagnie began her record setting day scoring 946 with an 8.83 in the 60m hurdles before clearing a NJCAA national qualifying height of 1.63m (5-04.25) in the high jump to earn another 771 points. Blowing away the field by over two feet in the shot put, Champagnie bettered her existing qualifying standard by five feet taking home first place with a 13.98m (45-10-50) throw and 793 points. Moving into the fourth event, a long jump event she has already reached national qualifying standards, Champagnie scored 657 points with a 5.35m (17-06.75) leap. Coming down to the final and fifth grueling event of the 800m, Champagnie's 2:36.00 time was just enough to break the record with a final 620 points.
In the short sprints, Sabrina Mason surpassed her national qualifying time finishing ninth in a time of 25.17. Fellow qualifier Tamara Style competed later in the elite group clocking a 25.07. The Lady Cougars had three entries in the 400m led by the improving Brooklyn Polk's 57.21 time. Fellow qualifier Rian Robinson ran a 57.33 and O'neisha Glover added her name to the Barton national qualifying list clocking a 58.35.
Tasha Frazier recorded a season best on Saturday with a 5.61m (18-05.00) long jump adding four inches of distance to her existing national qualifying mark. Frazier then just missed her personal best in the 60m hurdles breaking the line at 8.57 finishing thirteenth in the thirty-one entry event. Frazier also competed in the triple jump but was not able to improve her fourth best national mark fouling on her three attempts.
Michelle Tomlin carried the Barton flag in the throws, recording a 12.72m (41-08.75) in the shot put and a 14.86m (48-09.00).
Already having the nations eighth best time, the 4X400m relay team of Robinson, Polk, Glover, and Style jumped to the nation's second spot with a 3:47.87.
Barton will take a couple of weeks off of competition in preparation of the Region VI/KJCCC Indoor Championships held February 19-20 in Pittsburg, KS.
