The Barton Community College women's track and field team opened their 2016 indoor season this past Friday at the Bill Easton Classic inside Anschutz Pavilion on the campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.  Competing against NCAA level teams along with Region VI foe Cowley College, the Lady Cougars had nine performances reaching national qualifying standards.  

Sophomore Tasha Frazier led the Lady Cougars with two second place finishes including leading a trio of Barton hurdlers reaching national standards finishing in the top five of the 60m hurdles.  Taking .06 off her prelim time, Frazier took second with an 8.72 while teammates Ayesha Champagnie and Tamara Style finished fourth and fifth with respective 8.93 and 9.12.   Frazier also eclipsed national standards taking second in the triple jump with a leap of 11.97m (39-03.25).  Brianna Payne's 10.54m (34-07.00) was also a national mark as the Florida freshman finished ninth.

Freshman Asha Douglas, who was a key member on the cross country team this past fall, had a good start to her indoor season taking second place in the 800m with a national qualifying time of 2:25.39.

Michelle Tomlin was also one of the many talented freshman making their debut Friday and made a splash with two top five placings and national qualifying marks.  Tomlin began the day with a fifth place weight throw finish with a spinning heave of 14.91m (48-11.00) before the Nebraska native took second in the shot put with a throw of 14.43m (47-04.25).  Champagnie, who had a busy day on the track and field, picked up her second fourth place finish and national qualifying mark of the day as the Jamaican recorded a 12.38m (40-07.50) giving the Lady Cougars two top-4 finishes in the shot put.

The Lady Cougars return to action on Friday in the two-day Holiday Inn Invitational held on the campus of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska.
