Lady Cougars track and field compete in Nebraska, add another national qualifying event

The Barton Community College women's track and field team took a break from competing against NCAA Division I powerhouses in taking part in the Fred Beile Classic on Saturday in Crete, Nebraska.  Hosted by Doane College, Barton primarily sent the sprinters and field event athletes as the Lady Cougars added another qualifying event for the NJCAA National Indoor Championships.

Ambria Avery posted her season best time in the 60 Meter Dash clocking in at 8.13 during the preliminary round.  Avery went on to finish 8th in finals crossing the line in a slightly slower 8.21.  Avery also competed in the 200 Meter but ran her season worst in 27.23 to finish 11th.  Teammate Kiana Winston competed in the event for the first time this season finishing in 13th in 27.37.  Modesty Lorick also competed in an event for the first time, finishing 2nd in the 400 Meter Dash in 1:00.87 and just .22 seconds from first place.  Winston and Avery also competed in the event finishing 13th and 14th in 1:05.00 and 1:05.19 respectively.

Lorick added a national qualifying event to her season, finishing third in the 60 Meter Hurdles in 9.17.  Winston also qualified for the finals hurdling her way to a season best 9.28 to finish 5th, missing the fourth spot a mere .003 seconds.  Lahni Clifton competed in the event for the first time this season and finished 21st in 9.80.

Annette Gaskins, who has already qualified for nationals in the long jump, surpassed the mark again by leading the Barton jumpers to finish 2nd at 5.58m.  N'Kia Jones finished 9th at 5.23m while Tahje Ochs reached a personal best 5.07m to finish two spots behind in 11th place.  Clifton placed 23rd at 4.70m.  In the triple jump the Lady Cougars had two jumpers led by Ochs' 10.08m 12th place finish while Jones placed 16th at 9.19m.

Elizabeth Evans competed in both the Shot Put and Weight Throw placing 13th in the shot at 11.61m but did not record a throw in the weight event. 

Barton will take a rare trip out to Colorado this weekend as the Lady Cougars will compete in the two-day Air Force Open held in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
