10th ranked Barton women's tennis knocks off No. 5 in 3-1 weekend against ranked opponents at Collin College Super Six Bash #GoBarton

2023-24 Barton Community College women's tennis team

The 10th ranked Barton Community College women's tennis team went 3-1 this past weekend against ranked opponents in Plano, Texas, participating in the Collin College Super Six Bash.

Making the long trip and stepping onto the court Thursday, the Cougars' comeback after being swept in doubles to host No. 9 Collin County Community College fell short in splitting singles play for a 6-3 defeat.

The Cougars returned to the court on Friday for a pair of matches, the first resulting in a 7-2 victory over No. 15 Jacksonville College followed by knocking off 5th ranked Weatherford College by a narrow 5-4 score.

Wrapping up the weekend Saturday, Barton won 6-3 in its lone match over 14th ranked Meridian Community College.

Improving to 5-2 on the season, Barton returns to action on Tuesday, March 5, at McPherson College. The Cougars will then open the home slate March 15 in the two-day Stueder Contractors' Cougar Classic.

Ranked 18th in the lone rankings released last November, Luciana Braga had an impressive weekend going 4-0 in the No. 1 singles slot beginning with knocking off Collin's 15th ranked Ekaterina Orlova 6-0 and 6-4. Taking care of 20th ranked Nana Kusumoto of Jacksonville 6-3 and 6-0 on Friday, Braga concluded the day's action with a 6-3 first set and 7-2 tie break in the second to sweep her third straight opponent. On Saturday in the Cougars' concluding and lone match, the sophomore prevailed in a war-of-attrition third set 12-10 victory against 17th ranked Randy Rakotoarilala of Meridian completing the perfect weekend.

Also perfect on the weekend was Ana Vasilis as the No. 5 slot player only lost two games out of fifty including a straight set 6-0 blanking moving up to the 4th spot to knock off Jacksonville's 41st ranked Adriana Iturraide.

Vasilis and No. 3 doubles partner Ana Alice Tosetto led Barton's doubles' results going 2-1 plus a forfeited victory coming against Jacksonville. The No. 1 tandem of Braga and Carmen Lyons were on the wrong side of four tough matches with Andrea Pulido and Diana Souza splitting their duo results.

Like Vasilis, Tosetto was unblemished in the No. 6 slot of the lineup, allowing just two losses in her thirty-eight games played and receiving another victory due to Jacksonville's forfeit.

Playing without their No. 2 singles player and 39th ranked Andjela Mrvaljelic all weekend due to illness, the lineup from No. 2 through No. 4 fluctuated match-to-match.

Lyons knocked off two ranked opponents in 2-2 weekend, victories coming on a 15-13 third set breaker marathon over 34th ranked Tsitsi Claire Mahere of Meridian and a straight set victory over 47th ranked Ozi-Oiza Yakubu of Jacksonville. The sophomore's losses came playing up in the No. 2 slot against the 24th ranked Mikayla Pitt of Collin and Meridian's 22nd ranked Isabella Quintero.

Pulido and Souza each went 1-3 in Barton's other singles results.
