The 6th ranked Barton Community College women's tennis team concluded a busy week against some of the nation's best on the hard court competing at the Southwest JUCO Tournament held in Plano, Texas.
The Cougars began a tough stretch of competition on Thursday in Arkansas City, taking a 9-0 loss at 2nd ranked Cowley College in conference action.
Making the immediate trip to Texas, the Cougars went 4-3 in the opening rounds of singles and 1-1 in doubles action, in addition to, having to default one of the tandem matches.
On the winner's side of the bracket, the semifinal results sent the Cougars to 3rd place match with 12th ranked Clara Penido the lone to pull out a victory by a 6-2, 6-3 score.
Azul Barrios, competing in the third flight, won her first match in a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory but the 36th ranked player was derailed in the semifinals by a tough pair of 6-4 losses before dropping the 3rd place match on 6-2, 6-3 scores.
A pair of 3rd place matches weren't played, 30th ranked Tshegofatso Tsiang in the second flight and Ana Alice Tosetto's in the fourth flight. Tsiang opened her day with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win and took the opening set 6-3 in the semifinals but had had to retire due to sickness and was unable to play the3rd place match. Winning by a 6-2, 6-1 first match tally, Tosetto dropped a 6-1, 6-3 loss in the semifinals with her 3rd place match left unplayed.
Each of the Cougars' opening round setbacks to the consolation side fell short in their placement matches.
Coming up short on a 10-3 tiebreak in the first flight first round, 20th ranked Luciana Braga advanced to the 5th place match winning a tough 6-4, 7-6(4) match before falling in the placement tiebreak 10-8 after splitting the first two sets.
In the third flight, Carmen Lyons dropped a pair of 6-2 sets in the opening round before being sent to the 7th place match on a 10-7 tiebreaker before losing the placement by twin 6-0 scores.
Ana Vasilis was bouncded to the backside of the fourth flight bracket following 6-0, 6-1 losses, receiving a bye in the consolation semifinals in falling 6-2, 6-0 in the 5th match.
In doubles play, the second flight tandem of Lyons/Vasilis rolled to the title match on 8-3 and 8-4 scores in the first two rounds before falling 8-1 in the weekend's last match.
In the first flight the 5th place match would be an unplayed intrasquad tangle between Penido/Tsiang and Braga/Barrios as each went 1-1 on the weekend. Coming off Tsiang's default in singles play, the duo defaulted their first round tandem play before winning their lone match 9-7. Braga/Barrios lost their opening match 8-4, advancing to set up the all-Cougar 5th place matchup with an 8-4 consolation semifinal win.
Barton has an additional tune-up this weekend with a pair of matches in Missouri before turning its sights on hosting the two-day KJCCC/Region VI Championships beginning Friday, April 21st at Veteran's Memorial Park.
