11th ranked Barton women's tennis falls to 4th ranked Cowley College #GoBarton

The Barton County Community College women's team were competitive Wednesday afternoon against the 4th ranked Tigers of Cowley College at Great Bend's Shannon Schartz Tennis Courts but had nothing on the scoreboard to show for it other than a 9-0 loss in the books.

Results were close in four of the nine conference matches on the windy afternoon, including the No. 1 doubles match from Angelina Gnezdilova and Clara Penido. The duo held a late lead in the match but the 5th ranked duo of Isid Hernandez and Ntokozo Zungu finishing strong for a 9-7 victory.

Zungu picked up her second win over Penido in the No. 2 singles matchup as the 14th ranked Tiger took the first set 6-4 in holding off a third set by taking the second in the tie break 9-7.

Azul Barrios pushed for an upset over 16th ranked Saara Kunakunova in the No. 4 slot, winning the first set 7-5 but dropping the second 6-2 before falling 10-7 in the third.

A step above in the No. 3 singles, Malena Hernandez battled Mariia Koroleva but fell to the 21st ranked player 6-4 and 6-3.

The Cougars will face its second straight nationally ranked opponent on Monday, hosting 5th ranked Seward County Community College in a 1:00 p.m. first serve at Schartz Courts.
