Barton women’s tennis takes down Southwestern 5-2; Men win 7-0.
Trailing after doubles action, the 10th ranked Barton Community College women's tennis team won five of the six singles matches Monday for a 5-2 victory at Southwestern College while the 7th ranked men's won 7-0.
In the women's matchup against Southwestern's NAIA Central Region ranked players, the Cougars were victorious in each of the three matchups.
No. 1 singles Angelina Gnezdilova had the marathon match of the afternoon, outlasting the Builder's 10th regionally ranked Monalisa Chakraborty 14-12 in the tiebreak after splitting 6-3 sets. Gnezdilova teamed up with Clara Penido in the top doubles slot to win 6-3 over the region's 7th ranked duo of Samantha Loving and Catherine Coe. Penido also won her No. 2 singles match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Loving, who ranks 5th in the region.
Azul Barrios dominated her No. 4 singles match 6-2, 6-0 over Mariana Ochoa while Paula Curci needed a rally after dropping the first set 6-3 of her No. 5 singles match to Laura Adey in winning 6-3 and 10-3. Barrios and Curci weren't as fortunate in their No. 2 doubles match coming up on the short end of a 6-4 score to Ella Hartnett and Adey.
In the No. 3 singles slot, Malena Hernandez recovered from a slow start against Coe, dropping the first set 6-0 before taking the second 6-3 and prevailing 10-8 in the tiebreak.
At the No. 6, Jacie Roth battled Hartnett in losing the first set 7-5 before succumbing in the second 6-0.
Southwestern completed the team point in doubles play by adding a 6-2 victory in the No. 3 matchup as Ochoa and Jasmin Hauska defeated the Cougars' Hernandez and Roth.
Barton's next action comes Monday with a short trip to McPherson College.
