Barton women's tennis battles Division I Mavericks in season opener #GoBarton

The Barton County Community College tennis program opened up their 2021 season battling NCAA Division I University of Nebraska-Omaha to a 4.5-2.5 score Friday in Omaha, Nebraska.

Like a deer in the headlights, the Cougars were swept in doubles but rebounded by going shot-for-shot in singles play.

At the top of the lineup in No. 1 singles, Alexandra Abyasova and the Mavericks' Madison Gallegos put on a two hour slugfest in a match left unfinished due to time contraints. Gallegos got the upper hand with a 6-1 opening set before Abyasova took the second 7-6 by a 9-7 tiebreaker.

Barton victories came in the No. 3 and No. 4, Natsuki Nishimura winning the third slot in straight sets over Colby Kelly while Angelina Gnezdilova blanked the third set 6-0 after splitting the first two 6-4 and 3-6 to the Mavericks Lily Tiemeyer.

Both the No. 5 and 6 singles went to third sets with the Cougars coming up short, Malena Hernandez dropping a tough 6-2, 2-6, 5-7 loss to Addison Miller and Hailey Vinroe losing 6-1 in the third having split the first two 6-3 to Justine Linscott.  Annunciata De-Souza played tough in the No. 2 singles but came up short 6-4, 6-2 to UNO's Natalie Lorentz.

The Cougars will have a few weeks to prepare for its next competition as Barton travels to Plano, Texas, February 12-13 for the Collin College Super Bash.
