Longwe and Torregrosa survive second day of NJCAA Championships, No. 16 Barton Women's Tennis slides to 8th

The Barton Community College women's tennis team took some hits on day two of the NJCAA Division I National Tennis Championships in Tucson, Arizona.  With the dust settling from the day's Round of 16 action at the Reffkin Tennis Center, the Lady Cougars dropped from the top spot on the leaderboard to eighth place with just two entries remaining.

Idah Longwe was the lone singles player to come out victorious keeping her sophomore season alive and advancing to the Tuesday's quarterfinal round.  Having dropped just two games in her first round match, Longwe was nearly as dominant on Monday in a 6-1, 6-2 win over St. Petersburg College's Anatasha Worlds.  Longwe will next take on the flight's second seed Bianca Vitale of Broward College at 11:30 a.m. central time on Tuesday.

Longwe teamed up with her No. 1 doubles partner Neus Torregrosa for the afternoon action with the No. 7 seeded duo serving a three set scare to Central Alabama's Margaret Blackwell and Ashley Coots 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3.   Longwe and Torregrosa will next take on the fourth seeded pair of Naa Ankrah and Khanh Huynh of Mesa Community College on Tuesday in a 4:00 p.m. central time first serve.

The Lady Cougars unfortunately met up with a couple of familiar foes in the second round as fellow Region VI member and No. 6 ranked Seward County Community College ended Barton's season in three of the nine matches.  No. 9 Neus Torregrosa was taken down 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 1 singles flight by No. 7 Thalita Rodrigues while Lisa Suzuki ended Juliana Seabra's No. 3 singles career in a Barton uniform 6-1, 6-0.  Seabra also had her No. 2 doubles career come to an end by the rackets of the Lady Saints as No. 3 seeded Steffany Bermudez and Sarah Manseri handed Seabra and Julia Ramalho a 6-2, 6-2 defeat.
