Shorthanded Lady Cougar Tennis nearly pulls upset at No. 16 Johnson

The shorthanded Barton Community College women's tennis team nearly pulled the upset last Thursday in Overland Park, Kansas, dropping a 5-4 decision at No. 16 ranked Johnson County Community College to wrap up the regular season.   Playing without its No. 4 singles player and member of the No. 2 doubles team, Head Coach Lyle Stickney rearranged his lineup to draw a match away from a victory.  Moving Omelia Thomas to the No. 1 doubles with Karina Ono, the Lady Cougars began the dual with an 8-4 win.  Having to default the No. 3 doubles, Stickney moved his normal No. 1 doubles player Barbara Codognotto to the No. 2 spot teaming with Brittanie Eskut but the tandom fell 8-2.   With Johnson County playing without its No. 1 singles player due to injury, Barton picked up the top three singles matches as Ono, Codognotto, and Thomas each won their respective matches with Thomas having the match of the day winning the superset 10-6.  The Lady Cougars forfeited the No. 4 singles and couldn't pick up the remaining two matches to lose the dual 5-4.   Barton falls to 2-8 on the season headed to the Region VI postseason which begins on Friday, April 25 in Wichita, Kansas.
