Cougar Swimming earns five golds in season opener #GoBarton

The Barton Community College men's and women's swimming teams kicked off their 2021-22 season Saturday afternoon at the 3rd Annual Sam Freas Invitational in Edmond, Oklahoma. Although no team scores were kept, the Lady Cougars came home with an individual champion while the Barton men came away with four first place crowns.

On the women's side, Mikwena Lierman led the new look Cougars to its' lone gold in the opening event of the 50-yard freestyle. The freshman paced the six-competitor field clocking the third fastest mark in program history with a 24.71.

Turning in a solid collegiate debut was Dominique Cos as the freshman notched a pair of runner-up appearances in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.28) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.31).

Cindy Broadrick pieced together a pair of bronze finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.93) and 200-yard butterfly (2:23.55), while Olivia Kert rounded out the Cougar podium performances with a third place finish in the 200-breaststroke (2:35.98).

The Barton men pieced together four different individual crowns to go along with six runner-up showings.

Defending two-time NJCAA Champion from a season ago Johan Cue Carrillo got his sophomore season off to a strong start taking the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.56) to go along with a pair of runner-up outcomes in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.99) and 100-yard IM (55.30).

Enzo Vogt da Silva began his Cougar debut with an impressive showing as the freshman posted a new meet record capturing the 500-yard freestyle (4:48. 25). The freshman fell just seven-seconds back of capturing his second gold in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:12.88).

Sophomore Josias Solarte opened his sophomore campaign with a gold and silver medal in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.85) and 100-yard butterfly (51.83) respectively.

Rounding out the gold medal performances for the Cougars was freshman Tyler Woodworth claiming the 50-yard freestyle (20.99).

Barton's next meet is closer to home as the Cougars travel to Topeka on Friday October 1st for the Sunflower Showdown.
