Carrillo's two national titles lead Cougar men to 4th place showing at NJCAA Championships; Barton women finish 8th #GoBarton

The Barton Community College swimming programs concluded the 2021 season at the NJCAA National Swimming and Diving Championships held this past week at the Anne Wilder Aquatic Complex in Fort Pierce, FL. The Cougars returned home with a fourth place and eighth place finish including a multi-event individual national champion.

On the women's side, the two pack of Fanny Courbot and Sophia Ortiz guided Barton to an 8th place finish. The duo combined for eight placings with six new personal best efforts including a pair of school records falling and five adjustments to the top-10 record book.

The Cougar women concluded the week with 88 points falling just 47 points back of seventh place South Georgia State and 33 points above ninth place Iowa Lakes Community College. Claiming the team title was Indian River State College producing 1,374 points earning their 40th championship edging out runner-up Southwest Oregon Community College's 674 points.

The Barton men over the week shattered six program records, 47 new personal bests of which 41 landing inside the program's top-10 record books and the program's first multi-event individual national champion in the program's fourth year of existence.

The Cougar men tallied 597.5 points over the four-day event, falling .5 points back of third place Southwestern Oregon Community College. Host school Indian River Community College notched their 47th consecutive team title scoring a total of 1,340 points with runner-up Iowa Central Community College securing a runner-up finish scoring a 690.5 score.

Women's Recap:
Fresh off a pair of runner-up finishes from a year ago, Courbot led the charge recording 44 points over her four entered events. The sophomore rewrote a pair of her own school records with a runner-up performance in the 100 breaststroke turning in a 1:04.93 and eighth place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.68.

Courbot added a pair of bronze medal finishes in the 50 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke setting new season best marks of 30.16 and 2:23.64.

Turning in a solid national's debut, Ortiz accumulated 28 points over her four entered events including a best finish of seventh in the 100 IM clocking the sixth fastest mark in program history with a 1:08.62. The freshman continued her remarkable week obtaining a pair more top-10 program times in the 50 butterfly posting the seventh fastest of 29.69 earning ninth while swimming to a 13th place result in the 50 freestyle clocking the ninth fastest mark of 27.04.

Men's Recap:
Johan Cue Carrillo etched his name into the Cougar history books becoming Barton's first ever multi individual national champion in the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke. Carrillo started his weeks' march opening the men's first event with a school record clocking the top prelim time of 25.02 in the 50 breaststroke. In the evenings' finals session, he enhanced his school record touching the wall .49 tenths faster besting the eight-competitor field turning in a 24.53.

The freshman carried the momentum into the 100 breaststroke turning in the top preliminary mark and program's top time of 53.32. Looking for his second gold Carrillo capped the feature touching the wall quickest at 53.37 just .5 tenths off his prelim mark.

Returning long distance specialist's Nikolas Ioannides and Kacper Mayerberg pieced together the top individual point tally's finishing with 54 apiece edging out Carrillo's 53-point output.

The sophomore duo teamed up with Josias Solarte and Isaiah Auld conducted one of two Barton relay record breakers in the 800 freestyle stopping the clocks at 6:58.39 for a third best finish.

Another Cougar record fell by the wayside in Thursday's 200 freestyle final as Audl clocked a 1:41.78 earning a fifth place performance. Audl concluded his strong freshman campaign adding a pair of sixth place showings in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke while accounting for an 11th place finish in the 50 freestyle.

In Friday's 200 butterfly, Mayerberg and Solarte went head-to-head with one another as Solarte displayed the third best preliminary time and program best 1:52.76 edging Mayerberg's fourth place 1:56.51. The roles would reverse in the evening session as Mayerberg soared to the top of the record books posting a third place finish with a mark of 1:52.46 edging his counterpart Solarte by .17 tenths.

Mayerberg additional added a sixth and eighth place finish in the 400 IM and 1000 freestyle. In the 400 IM the sophomore secured the second fastest time of 4:06.79 falling 4.85 seconds back of Christopher Sprenger's top time sat at last year's NJCAA Championships.

The Cougars topped the week trip with the final record breaker coming in Saturday's final event as Justus Hampton, Branden Augustine, Solarte and Auld clocked a fourth place finishing time of 3:08.46 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Closing his Barton career on a high note clocking season best marks in all four events, Ioannides paced the Cougar squad to three top-five finishes in the 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle and 1650 freestyle with placings of 5th, 5th and 4th respectively with his fourth individual placing coming with an 8th place finish in the 200 freestyle.

Other Cougars earning top-8 finishes were Clayton Brown (7th – 50 backstroke), Jordan Weve (7th – 100 IM and 8th – 100 butterfly), Josias Solarte (7th – 100 butterfly), Justus Hampton (7th – 50 freestyle).
