Barton women's soccer celebrates victory over Garden City

Francesca Martella's five-point performance and a balanced scoring attack steered the 18th ranked Barton Community College women's soccer team to a 5-0 rout over Garden City Community College Wednesday afternoon at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

Closing out the home portion of the regular season, the Cougars increase their second place mark in the KJCCC west to 9-2-1 and season record to 12-2-1 while the Broncbusters fall to 2-10-0 in conference play and 6-12-0 overall. Barton will conclude the regular season on Saturday with a trip to conference front-runner 13th ranked Cowley College in a 2:00 p.m. kick-off.

Tied as the top point producer on the team Seulgi Lee opened the scoring at the 16:20 mark carrying Martella's thru ball inside the 18' banging a strike off Broncbuster keeper Anahi Castillo for her eighth net shaker of the season.

Eight minutes later Barton made it 2-0 as Martella's second thru ball of the half found the sprinting Mercy Azanapo as the sophomore fired a sliding laser from 14-yards out placing it just inside the far post for her second lamp lighter of the year.

Flipping sides of the pitch for the second half, Martella sustained her offensive production opening the scoring just 7:54 into the period sneaking a 25-yard chip shot under the crossbar for her fourth tally of the season coming off Annika Gerdau's fifth setup of the year.

Just 7:52 later Gerdau's deflected shot attempt found the charging foot of Martella as the sophomore positioned her third perfect thru ball of the contest finding the unmarked Alisia Solis as the freshman converted the 1-on-1 matchup with Garden's Castillo chipping home her eighth net shaker of the year extending the Barton lead to 4-0.

The Cougars' final tally came in the 72nd minute with Nicole Thorp sending home her fourth goal of the season off the brilliant passing from Silvia Cinque's initial backline launch and Lee's 17th career assist tying her for seventh all-time in career assists.

Notching her second start of the season Maria Gutierrez supplied her first solo shutout of the season and Barton's eighth clean sheet of the year rejecting both Broncbuster shots on frame improving her season mark to 2-0-0 between the pipes.

Martella's three-assist act tied her for eighth all-time in assists per game while oddly enough becoming the third different Cougar to scatter a trio of assists on October 20th.
