Counter attack sinks Barton women in 2-1 double overtime loss #GoBarton

Barton women's soccer Mercy Azanapo goes up for a header

The Coffeyville Community College women's soccer team made the most of a breakaway opportunity late in double overtime Saturday to leave the Cougar Soccer Complex with a 2-1 victory over Barton Community College.

The loss drops Barton to 1-1 in conference play and 3-1 on the season as the Red Ravens improve to 2-0 in league and 3-1 overall.

Next up for the Cougars is a non-conference trip on Tuesday in a 3:00 p.m. kick-off at Highland Community College.

Barton got on the board just 2:08 into the contest as Francesca Martella set up Annika Gerdau for her team leading 7th goal of the year delivering a 30-yard blast upper-90.

The Red Ravens came through with the equalizer with 24:49 left in the opening half Blanca Rea's floating cross attempt found the net back post.

Barton put up four more shots than Coffeyville in first frame, having a two shot advantage on frame, but the remaining contest was a defensive tangle.

Both teams were only to put up three shots each but none were on frame with Coffeyville controlling most possessions until the final ten minutes including Martella's shot banging off the crossbar with twenty seconds left in regulation.

The Cougars had another near goal midway through the first golden goal but Natalia Baltodano's shot sailed just over the crossbar for the teams' only shot attempt.

Two shots were launched in the final frame with Gerdau's attempt sailing high while the Red Ravens capitalized on their lone shot.  Getting a breakaway off a counter situation, Shyanne Reid slipped behind the defense setting up a 2-v-1 situation then slipped a through ball to Rea on the backside for the game winner with 3:04 remaining.
