Late goal knocks off 10th ranked KCK sending Barton Women's Soccer into Sunday's Championship.
Rattling the nets with 2:09 remaining, the Barton Community College women's soccer team knocked off 10th ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College 2-1 Saturday at Wichita's Stryker Sports Complex sending the Cougars into Sunday's Region VI/Plains District Championship game.
Improving to 12-3-1 on the year, Barton will face Butler Community College (6-8-1) in the Sunday 3:00 p.m. title game as the Grizzlies knocked off No. 20 Hutchinson Community College 1-0 in the earlier semifinal matchup. KCK drops to 12-2-1 on the year while Hutchinson drops to 7-3-4 as each await possible at-large consideration for a national tournament appearance.
Following a scoreless first forty-five minutes, the Cougars took the intial lead ten minutes into the second half as Annika Gerdau's corner kick was met by the rise-n-shine header of Seulgi Lee for the freshman's fourth goal of the season.
Thirteen minutes later KCK got the equalizer on a Katharina Oelschlager blast from twenty-eight yards out to sneak in far post just beyond the reach of Cougar goalkeeper Maria Gutierrez.
Following a tense twenty minutes with each team getting quality scoring opportunties, the Cougars' Kadin Stinson made the critical play putting Barton ahead for the final time with 2:09 remaining. Outdueling a KCK defender winning a lose ball header, Stinson moved the ball forward towards goal then warded off a defender for a twelve yard strike past the keeper for the sophomore's thirteenth net rattler of the year.
