Chavez winds up Barton Wrestling season at NJCAA Championships #GoBarton

Dawson Chavez of the Barton Community College wrestling team went 1-2 against three seeded competitors Friday at the 2022 NJCAA Wrestling National Championships held at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Knocking off the No. 7 seed in his first round last year, the Cougars' lone national qualifier was again pitted against a seeded competitor in the first round. Taking on 5th seeded Deville Dennis of NIACC, Chavez escaped from an early takedown but the second time was too much as the eventual sixth place finisher ended the match 1:28 left in the first period.

Chavez bounced back on the consolation side, pulling ahead in the second period before piling up a third period takedown and near fall to ride out a 12-5 decision over 12th seed Gus Harrison of Northwest. Advancing to the consolation round of 16, Chavez ran across his third seeded opponent in having his season end on a 1:20 fall to 6th seeded Drake Campbell of Triton.

The .5 earned by Chavez on the one victory moved Barton into 48th of the final team standings.
