Knocking off a ranked opponent in its debut, the Barton Community College wrestling team split its season and conference opening triangular Wednesday night at the Barton Gym.
The unranked Cougars began the day with a hard fought 34-12 victory over 17th ranked Labette Community College before battling tough in dropping a 28-6 score to 5th ranked Cowley College.
Barton jumped all over the Cardinals in the opener, winning the first six bouts then in the match against Cowley, had opportunities as six of the ten were decided in the final thirty seconds.
The Cougars continue conference play next Tuesday in traveling to Pratt Community College for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
Drew Burgoon led Barton on the night with a unblemished 2-0 record in the 141 division including a 12-1 major decision over 2nd ranked Cade Wathke of Labette and a 9-2 decision over Cowley's Nathan Adamson.
Local product Drew Liles helped set a tone from the top of the lineup, registering a 2:39 Fall in the day's opening bout before battling Cowley's 2nd ranked Corwin Strachan to a 2-1 decision in the 125 division.
Liles and five other Cougars concluded the action at 1-1 with brother Cody Liles winning his solo match 5-0 against Labette's Alex Young.
