Barton wrestling team and Gage Gomez

The No. 10 ranked Barton Community College Wrestling team took the top spot for the third straight year among fellow Kansas two-year colleges this past weekend at the Kansas Cup hosted by Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. Advancing nine athletes to the semifinal round, the Cougars came away with a third place overall finish for the second straight year in the twelve team tournament.

Gage Gomez became Barton's first Kansas Cup Champion taking the 133 division title with an 8-7 win over Pratt Community College's Justin Hershberger. The Altus, Oklahoma, native began his day with a 10-0 major decision over Newman University's Vincent Eremita before pulling out an upset victory in the semis with a 5-4 decision over Fort Hays State University's Dy'Juan Carney. The performance also earned Gomez one of the prestigious event awards in being named the two-year division wrestler of the meet.

Two of Barton's four ranked wrestlers reached the championship dual. No. 2 ranked Kade Sander rolled to his 157 class title match with an 18-0 first period tech fall over Kansas Wesleyan University's Devin Conklin before pinning region foe Ryan Delforge of Cloud County Community College in 1:52. The Great Bend native's title hopes were halted by top seeded Tyler Mies of NAIA division Newman University by a 12-1 major decision.

Top seeded and No. 5 ranked David Kelly also had his 174 division title hopes fall short by a four year program's wrestler after rolling to the finals with a 20-2 third period tech fall over Cowley College's Shawn Dent before advancing on a first period injury of Zach Gadbois of Bethany College. The Wichita sophomore's bid for the title ended with a 9-3 decision to FHSU's Micquille Robinson.

The Cougars next action comes on Thursday in a 7:00 p.m. dual at Pratt Community College before heading to Parsons, Kansas, for Saturday's dual matches hosted by Labette Community College.
