Competing against a field packed with wrestlers from nationally ranked programs on the NCAA Division I and II levels, the No. 16 ranked Barton Community College wrestling program went 13-26 on Sunday at the Bob Smith Open hosted by Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.

The Cougars took just one loss on the day against junior college competition with eight combined losses alone coming at the hands of Division I powerhouses Oklahoma State University and the University of Nebraska.

Barton will have one more meet coming up on Saturday, December 9, before taking the rest of the semester and holidays away from competition as the Cougars travel to Crete, Nebraska, for the Doane Open.

Five of Barton's first losses on the day went on to place in the respective bracket, including three that captured the division title while another finished runner-up and another placed fourth.

In the 174 division, David Kelly was one of those to be bounced to the consolation by the eventual champion before battling back through the bracket to take fourth place overall. Kelly opened up with a bye before taking down Neosho County Community College's Brayden Collins in a 3:30 fall. Next up was an unattached opponent, one who will be challenging for the starting position at No. 13 ranked Nebraska, as Kelly run to the quarterfinal ended in a 23-8 technical fall to Mikey Labriola. Ending the day of fellow Cougar Victor Monarrez with a fall on the back side of the draw, Kelly pinned his next opponent as well, Jorday Wesley of Colby Community College in a 1:27 clocking before advancing with an injury forfeit over Fort Hays State's Dylan Wiesner. Kelly's day fell short of the third place medal succumbing to NCAA Division II No. 10 ranked Miguel Barreras of Central Oklahoma.

Two of the Cougars losses to eventual champions came to nationally dominate wrestlers from NCAA Division I powerhouse Oklahoma State University. Hagen Kent was the first to face goliath, taking on last year's national runner-up Kade Brock as the now No. 4 ranked Cowboy ended the 133 division match in a 2:24 pin. Perhaps the unluckiest of draws for Barton came in the 141 division as Keaton Sander lasted 1:48 against the two-time national defending champion and No. 1 ranked Dean Heil.

Wrestling unattached in the 149 division, Dominick Howard also drew an unlucky first match against a Cowboy, falling in 1:53 to No. 10 ranked Geordan Martinez. Martinez would go on to place second, dropping a 7-6 decision to fellow Cowboy Boo Lewallen who was wrestling unattached.

Going 2-2 on the day were Monarrez, Gage McBride, and Brix Brickey. McBride was sent to the 165 division consolation round by a 1:50 fall to the eventual fourth place finisher, John Blankenship of Nebraska. McBride then ended the day of fellow Cougar Kelton Suchy by a narrow 4-2 decision before racking up an 18-1 technical fall over Pratt Community College's Sean Pilger. Facing his second Nebraska wrestler of the day, McBride lasted 1:19 before Dalton Peters continued the march in the bracket, eventually falling to fellow Husker Blankenship.

Ranked No. 5 in the NJCAA, 285 division Brix Brickey registered two falls to begin his day. Beginning with a 2:14 fall over Adams State's Rico Garcia, Brickey avenged an earlier season loss to Cloud County's Benny Hernandez with a late 5:45 fall. Battling Fort Hays State's Dakota Gulley through three rounds, Brickey came out on the short side of a 5-2 quarterfinal score before taking a 1:01 fall to Northern Colorado's Brian Barnes.
