Cougar Wrestling wraps up fall semester at Jet Invite

The Barton Community College wrestling team wrapped up its fall portion of the schedule with two competitions within three days.   The Cougars traveled to Parsons, Kansas, on Friday picking up a 25-9 conference dual win over Labette Community College before making its way to Wichita for Sunday's Jet Invite hosted by Newman University.   Sending nine wrestlers to the mat on Sunday, the Cougars scored 15.5 team points to finish sixth in the ten team Invite.  Barton will take the holidays off from competition before returning to action January 2 at the Midland Open in Fremont, Nebraska.

Zach Vesta again led the Cougar performances picking up a third place finish going 3-1 in the 149 weight class.  Receiving a first round bye, Vesta took care of Newman's Forlanda Parker win a 2:34 fall.   Vesta was bounced to the consolation side of the bracket dropping a hard fought 5-4 decision to Oklahoma City University's Travon Smith in the semifinal round.   The Manhattan freshman then outdueled Bethany College's Trent Robb, picking up a 6:38 pin advancing to the third place match.   Taking just seventeen seconds into the second period, Vesta picked up his third victory via a pin taking care of Parker again for the third place medal.

Oklahoma City University earned the team title with 118.0 points, just two better than second-place Central Oklahoma. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, a team the Cougars hosted in its first ever home dual, finished third at 90.5 with Fort Hays State University 5.5 points ahead of host Newman's 57.0.   Labette came in .5 points behind the Cougars with Bethany, Northwest Kansas Technical College, and Neosho County Community College rounding out the team standings.
