Barton Bowling strikes in season opener
Hitting the lanes to kick off the 2021 season, the Barton Community College bowling programs found success this past weekend in Texas. Fresh off a runner-up finish in their inaugural season, the Lady Cougars rolled to a fourth place showing with the Cougar men finishing fifth in Saturday's Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Circuit-I in Dallas. In Sunday's portion of the SWIBC-II in Plano, both Cougar squads toppled their previous days performances securing third place showings.
The Cougars next action will come this weekend for the Hastings College Tournament held Saturday and Sunday at the Pastime Lanes in Hastings, NE. Adhering to the protocols, no spectators are allowed in the facility, but the contests can be viewed for free via the Barton Sports Network located at BartonSports.com.
In women's action the Cougars pieced together a fourth-place result tallying 4827 pins over four team games and ten baker games, finishing 168 pins shy of Spring Hill College. Claiming the team title in Saturday's action was Newman University toppling 5448 pins, 282 pins more than runner-up West Texas A&M University.
Sophomore Alexandria Newell led the Lady Cougars individually on Saturday, rolling to an average score of 182 earning a third-place performance.
On Sunday, the Lady Cougars put together a stouter showing tallying 5372 pins falling just 37 knocks behind second place West Texas A&M University and 133 pins ahead of fourth place Spring Hill College. Running away with the team title for the second-consecutive day was Newman University finishing with 5771 pins.
Individually Taylor Cessna, guided the Lady Cougars with a runner-up display, tossing a six-game total of 1170 pins, including four games of 200 or higher falling five pins shy of an average game score of 200. Falling just outside the top-10 was Newell teaming up with Cessna as the other lone Cougar tossing games of 200 or higher.
The Cougar men placed fifth in Saturday's competition, knocking down 5189 pins finishing 58 pins shy of Spring Hill College. Newman University tallied the most tipping over 5509 pins with Drury University finishing runner-up with 5330.
Leading the charge for the Barton men on Saturday was Great Bend, KS native Jordan Black. The sophomore produced the lone top-10 performance individually placing ninth with 754 pins, averaging 188 per-contest.
In Sunday's competition, the Cougars put together a stout performance leaping a pair of teams from the previous day to earn a third-place finish blasting down 5731 pins edging out Drury University by 41 pins. Newman University led the field once again tallying 6224 pins, 211 more than runner-up West Texas A&M University.
Creyton Nisly guided the Cougars individually earning an eighth-place performance tallying 1226 total pins averaging 204 per-game over his six contests bowled. Black led Barton with the best single game score of 279 falling just 21 pins shy of a perfect game.
