Onugha’s record breaking performance leads Barton women in second half comeback victory.
Sparked by the record breaking rebound performance by Vivian Onugha, the Barton Community College basketball team shook off a dismal first half to roll in the final twenty minutes for a 71-47 victory hosting Fort Hays Tech Northwest.
The Tigers of FHTNW played an inspired and pesky first half, leading by four after the first frame in holding off the Cougars in leading 27-25 at the halftime break.
Barton shook off the miscues and frigid 24% shooting to flip the tide with 56% shooting in the second half in outscoring the Tigers by twenty-six points notching their 8th straight victory in the series.
The Cougars improve to 2-7 in KJCCC play and 6-9 overall while Fort Hays Tech remains winless at 0-10 in league and 0-14 on the season.
Next up is a Saturday trip to Colby Community College for a 2:00 p.m. tip at the Colby Event Center before a pair of home contests next week to conclude the first path through the rugged Jayhawk Conference.
Contributing to the second half domination was the performance from Onugha, grabbing 15 second half boards in finishing with 26 total in breaking the program's single game rebound record of 25 set by Taylor Regan in the 2019 season.
Onugha's breakdown consisted of 10 offensive rebounds leading to 17 points, ten in the final half in notching her 11th double-double of the season and 24th of her career.
Four additional Cougars reached double figures as Brittany Simpson led the squad with 18 points and a team second best 7 rebounds. Regina Donanu netted 14 points with 4 assists, Alaina Eck with 11 points and a team leading 4 of the team's 16 steals, and Keyona Hall with a solid all-around game of 10 points, 6 rebounds, a team high tying 4 assists, and 3 steals.
The Tigers' Dekeira Clay led all scorers with 21 points with team highs of 4 assists and 6 steals as Al'asia Brown finished with 9 points.
