Late charge falls short, Barton women drops home contest to Cowley.
A big deficit was too much to overcome Saturday evening as a late charge by the Barton Community College women's basketball team fell short 81-69 to Cowley College.
A 9-0 Tiger run ended the first quarter in building an eighteen point halftime edge with twenty-one of the points generated from seventeen Barton turnovers.
As Barton began a second half comeback, timely Cowley three-pointers dampened the stretches including consecutive long range shots in thirty seconds closing out the third frame.
The Cougars kept clawing back with a 10-2 run in the fourth but a costly turnover turning into the Tigers' 15th triple all but sealed the game with four minutes remaining.
Barton falls to 0-4 to begin league play and 4-6 overall while Cowley snaps its four-game losing streak on the Cougars' floor improving to 2-2 in conference and 7-2 on the season.
Next up is a trip to El Dorado on Wednesday for 5:30 p.m. tip at 23rd ranked Butler Community College.
Following a quiet first half, Alaina Eck poured in seventeen of her career high 21 points in second half action to lead the Cougars' output.
Brittany Simpson added another all-around performance of 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, as did Kodi Greer with 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and a team leading 5 assists.
Hauling down 20 rebounds for the third time of the season, Vivian Onugha added 8 points in coming up short of her seventh double-double outing. The effort helped the Cougars to a plus-22 rebound margin in outscoring the Tigers by sixteen in the paint.
The Cougars were well above their season shooting percentage with a 46.7% evening but 1-of-12 from three-point land plus 27 turnovers resulted in a plus-32 point advantage on the Tigers' side of the scoreboard.
Cowley shot just 37.7% from the floor overall but an even better 15-of-37 (40.5%) beyond the arc in chalking up a 42-point differential from long range.
Five Cowley players reached double digit scoring led by Elysa Martinez' 20 points. Destiny Yates and Georgia Knight added 10 points each in a starting role as 26 points and 6-of-9 three-point shooting came off the bench as Jamie Molina scored 15 points on 3-of-5 arc busters and Rafa Bergonso contributing 11 points on 3-of-4 long shots.
