Barton women’s season ends in crushing double overtime defeat at Nationals.
The 16th ranked Barton Community College women's basketball team had their season end 64-56 in double overtime Tuesday in Lubbock, Texas, to Moberly Area Community College in the first round of the NJCAA Division I Tournament.
The Cougars held a twelve point lead with just over seven minutes to play and needed a Brennan Kirchhoff three-pointer to survive the Moberly charge to force extra time, came within a defensive rebound away from securing an overtime victory, then simply ran out of juice and execution in the second extra period in having the season come to a close.
Barton concludes the great overall season at 28-6 while 17th seeded Moberly improves to 29-3 in advancing to play top seeded South Georgia Tech in the Thursday, 2:00 p.m. second round contest.
Jenny Nkem Womsi led all players with 19 points and 17 rebounds to post her 25th double-double of the year while finishing just two rebounds shy of the program single season rebound record.
Fellow sophomores Acorionna Lard and Morgan Meyers concluded their Barton career with 11 and 10 points respectively, each knocking down a pair of treys with Lard adding 3 steals and Meyers dishing out 4 assists.
Kirchhoff finished with 7 points before fouling out in the first overtime period, leading the team with 5 assists and 4 steals.
The Cougars outrebounded the Greyhounds by seven in the contest, Womsi's 31st double-digit rebound effort was joined by Mikaela Hall's career high 12 boards, to go along with, 7 points in her final game in a Barton uniform.
Jenny Ntambwa's 17 points led Moberly, sinking 9-of-10 free throws as the Greyhounds held a plus-9 advantage from the charity stripe. T'Aailyah Miner sank 5-of-7 towards a 15 point performance while hauling down a game high 19 rebounds for the double-double effort and a team high 4 steals. McKenna Eddings added 11 points to round out the double digit scoring in canning three of the Greyhounds' four made three-pointers in going 3-for-12 beyond the arc.
In the defensive heavy contest, Barton shot a season second lowest 28.6% from the field with Moberly not much better at just 30.3%.
The Cougars committed 22 turnovers to Moberly's 16, magnified by the timing of the errors in allowing the Greyhounds to get back in the game in the fourth quarter outscoring Barton by eight and eventually proving too much to overcome in the final extra frame.
