Early deficit and long range shooting sends Barton women to loss versus 12th ranked Hutchinson.
The stars weren't aligned Wednesday evening as a tough start by the Barton Community College women's basketball team and a first place motivated hot shooting Hutchinson Community College team led to an 86-67 12th ranked Blue Dragon victory on the Cougars' Camp Hope Night at the Barton Gym.
The loss drops the Cougars into a three team third place tie of the Jayhawk West at 10-10 in the West and 14-15 overall heading into the final game of the regular season while the Blue Dragons continue to fight for a league title atop the standings at 18-2 and 26-3 overall.
Barton will look to hold on to a home first round region playoff game in Saturday's 5:30 p.m. tip versus Garden City Community College, with sophomore recognition taking place immediately following the contest..
A 2-0 start was the last Barton lead as Hutchinson jumped out 8-2 before burying the Cougars into a 22-8 hole with two minutes left in the opening stanza. Barton would trim the deficit to seven four minutes into the second frame but the Blue Dragons closed the second frame on a 12-2 run taking a 46-27 advantage into the locker room.
Hutchinson knocked down thirteen three pointers in the contest, including five in the fourth quarter, for their second best long range shooting performance of the season.
Vanessa Oduah led four Cougars in double-digit scoring tying her career high of twenty-two points to go along with distributing a team leading five assists. Queen Ulabo and D'Shonda Hunt each added fourteen with Ulabo pulling down a team high eight rebounds. Richelle Turney rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Cougars adding eleven.
Four Blue Dragon starters reached double figures with Tor'e Alford leading the team with twenty-four on a career high 7-of-9 shooting from behind the arc. Brooklyn Betham notched her third straight double-double effort scoring twenty to go along with a game high ten rebounds. Makayla Vannett recorded twelve while Lauryn Mapusua finished with eleven to go with a career high eight assists.
