Barton women can't dig out of first quarter hole, drop road game at Cloud County

Barton women grind out 66-56 win at Allen.

If the conference road isn’t rugged enough, giving a team too many second chances will compound the problems as the Barton Community College women found out Saturday night at the Sports Arena in a 72-53 loss at Hutchinson Community College. Despite holding the Blue Dragons to a season low 28% shooting from the field, Barton simply could not maintain the defensive glass in giving up twenty-eight offensive rebounds as Hutchinson also struck for its most three-pointers in a game to widen its margin each quarter for the nineteen point victory. The contest wrapped up the first portion of the season schedule as Barton goes to the holiday break seventh in the standings at 5-4 and 8-5 on the year while Hutchinson keeps pace with the leaders in a game back at 7-2 and 9-2 overall. Barton’s next action will come Wednesday, January 3, in hosting Cloud County Community College (7-2. 10-2) in a 5:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.

The Barton Community College women got off to a big start Wednesday night at the Barton Gym, extending an eleven point first quarter lead to a twenty halftime margin in cruising to a 75-52 victory over Dodge City Community College. The win improves Barton to 5-3 in Jayhawk play and 8-4 overall while sending the Lady Conquistadors to its fourth straight defeat in dropping to 2-6 in conference and 4-6 on the year. The Lady Cougars conclude the fall portion of the schedule on Saturday as Barton travels to Hutchinson Community College (6-2, 8-2) in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The bid for its third straight knock-off of one of the conference’s big dawgs came up short Saturday in Arkansas City as the Barton Community College women’s team had a season high turnover night in falling 65-56 to Cowley College. Barton’s end to its modest two-game win streak drops the Lady Cougars to 3-2 in Jayhawk play and 6-3 overall while Cowley remains unblemished on the season at 9-0 and tied atop the early standings at 5-0. The Lady Cougars return to the friendly confines of the Barton Gym on Wednesday in hosting Allen County Community College (1-4, 3-6) in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.

The Barton Community College women’s team was 5.9 seconds from defeat Saturday night at the Barton Gym but five ticks later the Lady Cougars were victorious in a 68-67 win over Butler Community College. Barton improved to 2-1 in Jayhawk play and 5-2 on the year as Butler falls to 1-2 and 4-2 overall. The Lady Cougars will be back on the court on Tuesday as the unblemished and No. 8 Lady Saints of the Seward County Community College (3-0, 5-0) come to the Barton Gym for a 5:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.

It was a chilly Wednesday night on the hardwood for the Barton Community College women’s team as the Lady Cougars suffered a dismal shooting night in a 71-51 defeat at Garden City Community College. Shooting just 27% from the field and 56% from the stripe, the Lady Cougars also gave the Broncbusters eighteen extra opportunities in turnovers leading to the loss in Barton’s first road game of the season. Garden City improves to 3-2 on the season in dropping Barton to 4-2 as both teams have split their first two games of the conference season. The Lady Cougars’ next test will come this Saturday as Butler Community College comes to the hill for a 5:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.

A 15-0 run in the first four minutes of Wednesday’s game at the Barton Gym set the tone for the Barton Community College women's basketball team as the Lady Cougars cruised to an 83-48 victory over the junior varsity squad from Sterling College. Outscoring Sterling by thirteen in the opening quarter while tacking onto the margin in each of the next two quarters, the Lady Cougars continued to wear down the 0-3 Warriors with a twelve point fourth in Barton’s final non-conference tune-up of the season. Next court action will come on Saturday in hosting Colby Community College in a 5:30 p.m. tip as both teams are off to identical 3-1 starts to the season.

A tale of two nights for the Barton Community College women’s basketball team as the Lady Cougars split their two games over the weekend’s Best Western and Cougar Booster Club Classic held at the Barton Gym. Getting off to a fast start in Friday night’s first and third quarters leading to a 78-64 win over Redlands Community College, dismal shooting in the same quarters on Saturday led to a 78-63 loss to Northern Oklahoma College-Enid. The Jets finish the Classic with two wins improving to 3-0 on the early season while the Lady Cougars’ weekend split leaves them at 2-1. Barton’s next action comes Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. tip hosting the junior varsity squad from Sterling College in their last tune-up before Saturday’s start of conference play.
